    DAM rpm's!!!!

    heya dudes,
    me once again,
i have been using linux for 3 months now, and am happy with the new learning curve.

I have done a fresh install of redhat 9, and the rpms ive been d/l have run fine,
just recently though once i type in the password for root etc. it searchers for process headers and all that and halfway through it disappears. and seems to crash, EVERY RPM is doing this, wtf is going on

p.s it was rpms of xine and mplayer

pps. any suggestions for a decent MEDIA player would be appreciated

how are you installin them from the cli of gui? also is your system up2date? if not it might be a bug in the rpm software

    just some thoughts
If you have to ask why you want to install Linux, then perhaps you shouldn't.

that depends on you system. In the command line type
    Code:
    uname -m
this will display your machine type, then pick one that matches your machine (if your machine is i586 pick i386).

BTW how are you installing the software? are you using apt-get or have you downloaded the mplayer.rpm and installing it that way?
The best way is to install apt-get and let that do the hard work.

This link will tell you about apt-get
    http://freshrpms.net/apt/
if you want more info, install the apt-get.rpm and read the man file, or search for apt-get for redhat on justlinux.

If it really is every RPM, you've got something pretty low-level going on. Posting some of the messages that appear onscreen just before the crashes would help decipher things.

Also, as other have asked- how are trying to install RPMs? If you're doing it at the command line, what syntax are you using? If you're using some graphical package manager, which one?
