It depends what you want from the book? But for beginer - intermediate stuff on the language I liked this book.

C: The Complete Reference - 4th Edition, Herbert Schildt.

If you already know C then the "linux programming bible" book shows you how to do things like shared memory and TCP/IP.

This book is awesome. Try to find it at your school library if you have access to one. It is the best book for when you have learned most of the C basics.

    I have (and like) :
Posix Programmer's Guide: Writing Portable Unix Programs With the Posix. 1 Standard
    The C/Unix Programmer's Guide

Type in POSIX at Amazon and most of the look guide. cprogramming.com has had a couple of book threads. vVv names some good networking ones.

trashthing: I think you are making the correct choice of book there.

If you want another book, Advanced UNIX Programming, Warren W.Gay pub. by SAMS is good and gives advice for various 'nix, not just Linux which is good if you want to be a bit more portable. Don't be put off by the title, IMO it is not a difficult read.

Why pirate software when Linux is so cheap?
