    xine problem :-(

I recently installed Mandrake 9.1. and I downloaded a video.
When I try to play the video xine (or some other media player like Noatun) will come up. The sound will play, but in the video screen all i can see is a bunch of scrambled green lines. I can't play any videos. :-( PLease Help!

My advice - install MPlayer. It's not too difficult. If you need help then we'll help you. Just install all the codecs first. There's some great documentation on the net.

Xine. although good, is not really designed to play movies (in my opinion) and is more a very trim, neat multimedia platform.

PM me and we'll set up a link. I'll transfer the packages you need over to you and we'll work on MSN Messenger (or something) and we'll have you running MPlayer but the close of play.

After that, for the benefit of others, I'll post the entire installation here on the HOW I DID IT!!! forum for others to follow.

The other day I tried Xine, and I had a similar problem...

It was playing video but not sound! Even if I specified to use OSS.

I guess I'm just going to use MPlayer with GUI.

    what is your hardware?
I have gotten mixed results with xvideo on different video cards at a variety of resolutions.

    first.
    what is your hardware
    graphics card mostly interested in

    second.
what resolution are you running at

    third.
which video output option are you using (XV, x11, mga, xvidix, directfb - to name a few)

    fourth.
This a dual head or single head machine
if dual head, first or second monitor?

Also, run "xvinfo" in X, this will tell you if X-Video is loaded and which version.

Hope this gives you an idea of where to start looking for solutions.
my experiance is that if xine doesn't work, mplayer wont either.

OK, I've installed all the codecs that I installed on my Slackware 9.1 machine, but the main MPlayer binary fails to compile. I have the following error:

Checking for XShape extension ... yes
    Checking for gtk version ...
Error: the GUI requires GTK (which was not found)

I have installed wxGTK and have verified that GTK (native) is installed - all 6 libraries.

Both installs were RPMs. The MPlayer was compiled.

Without the --enable-gui option, it appears to work, but this is still not acceptable. Can anyone suggest why the MPlayer doesnt work in GUI mode? I have tried the previous thread to download packages, to no avail.

Did you copy the default skin. Is gmplayer in /usr/bin or /usr/local/bin? Are you launching the correct mplayer?

I haven't installed the skin because MPlayer won't compile.

I have verified that every single "GTK" type package is installed. Does anyone know which package it requires?

I am compiling it from source.
