    Weird things on Mandrake 9.2

    Hi all
Still trying to recover things for kernel header with DMR's moderator help.
    Few more problems:
    1. My linux use to boot up/shutdown in graphical mode, with an option to press Esc for verbose mode. Now it is always booting/shutting in verbose mode.
    2. The window manager is behaving funny. When I select an item it automatically opens it. So I can't select it. How can I make it to do, one click for selection and 2 for opening/execution.
    Thanks

Easy to solve but for (1) you have to be " root "
and edit the boot loader (lilo or grub)
NOTE:- this is an explination of how to turn off the
bootup splash screen - so you will have to do the opposite.

    QUESTION:
I can't seem to be able to disable the boot splash,
in Mandrake 9.2, which is really driving me nuts.

    ANSWER:
    (a) To turn off the bootsplash, you can change the
'splash=silent' to 'splash=0' (ie. in Lilo or Grub)

    (b) But you may also want to try 'splash=verbose'
    and/or install the 'bootsplash-themes' package
from contrib and try some other themes (using
    /usr/share/bootsplash/scripts/switch-themes)

TAKE NOTE: if you want the bootup splash screen back
then you must ensure you use:- splash=silent
If /etc/lilo.conf is your boot loader, it goes in the line
    append="xxxxxxx xxxxxxxx xxxxxxx xxxxx"

    -------------------------------------

OK for (2) it depends which window manager you are using !
I expect as you are a newbie you are using the default
KDE but you could be using Gnome - or - one of the other
lighter WM's - so you see that when you ask a question
like this you have to be much more explicit, after all
people trying to help you are not clairvoyant !!!
Never the Less I will give two examples, one for KDE
and one for Gnome - and remember if the explination
is how to get " single click " working - all you have
to do is select the other alternative

    KDE
In KDE 3.x to change from single to double click or double to single click

Look in the KDE Control Center -> Peripherals -> Mouse and in the
General section under Icon you can change it to single or double click.

Having changed to single or double click remember to click the APPLY
befor you exit(close) the KDE Control Center - OR - it will not work.

(APPLY on the bottem left, stays grayed out untill you change something)

    Gnome

If you want to lauch your desktop applications with just
one click from your Gnome 2 desktop.

Click on the House button in the taskbar to launch nautilus.
    Click on Edit
    Click on Preferences
Click on Icon & List Views

Check the box - Activate items with a single click.
    Click on close.

    ---------------------------------------

The above method did not work for me using Mandrake 9.1 because
there is no House button on my taskbar. Also the single/double click
options are not in the Icon or List section. Maybe this was written
for Redhat 9 ? Here's an alternative way to do the same thing:-

    First Open Nautilus
    Click on Edit
    Click on Preferences
    Click on Behavior

Check the box - Activate items with a single click.
    Click on close.

    ---------------------------------------

Much the same but slightly diffrent ! In Mandrake Gnome 2
I found Nautilus from G-menu -> Applications -> File tools.
In Mandrake its also the House Icon on the Desktop, your
Linux distro may differ ? Whatever distro you use, you
should be able to change single/double click by looking
through the options in Nautilus -> Edit -> Preferences

    LAST TIP
I did not write out all the above from memory - I have
come across these tips in the past and I always COPY from
the webpage and PASTE into a Text editor (like Kedit or
Kwrite or whatever) and save the Text file to my HDD so
I have it for future reference - Easy ah

I think you meant file manager, in which case #2 is probably the well known konqueror bug that exists in all versions of Mandrake 9.x (maybe 10 too, I haven't tried the beta.) The quick solution is to just use the icon view. Why they still haven't fixed it is beyond my comprehension. It's definitely Mandrake's fault, not KDE's.
