Welcome to .iso Confused!
There will be some arguing, learning, and emotional investment happening in this forum- that is good. That is what Linux is about- freedom of choice.
Remember that no matter which distro you choose- they are still different flavors of the same brand of ice cream-Linux.
Right now I like Mepis, last year it was Slackware, before that it was Gentoo. Next year-who knows?
If you're looking for something to be another Windows, you're in the wrong place. If you're looking for something that is limited only by the hardware, then welcome.

I agree.
Let me also add, you gotta choose a distro YOU like, not one somebody else suggests.

To some extent it's a never ending process. I've tried dozens of different flavors of linux and arrived at my two favorites. If I hear of something new, I'll drop a machine and load up the new distro to check it out. http://www.distrowatch.com is an excellent spot to check out for various distributions.

Is this ice cream real, or metaphorical? If it is real, is it free, like free beer?

I believe you can lick Linux, but i wouldn't recommend it, you might destroy you media or computer with the slobber.
