A decent newsreader?

Does anyone know of a decent newsreader under development in Linux (other than PAN)?

I noticed that Microplanet Gravity has become open source - is anyone out there interested in porting it to a native Linux app? I am not a developer, but would gladly assist with help filles, manuals etc.

The project is coded in C++ and is located @ http://sourceforge.net/projects/mpgravity/

It would be great if some Linux developers could team with the existing development team to develop a kickass cross-platform newsreader and binary leecher to rival NewsRover, Agent (2.x, not 2), NewsLeecher etc.

Take a look at the bnr2 one, I have heard good things about it.. it is supposedly very good for people who subscribe to any of the "binary" stuff.

I'm aware of BNR2. It has data corruption & stability issues and is not a newsreader in the traditional sense. Good for binaries but not for reading text based NG's.

Actually that is probably an old rumour as I use it in Win and in Linux. The app is under constant improvement. No stability problems here. Microplanet Gravity is one of my favorites...I could have sworn I saw linux port somewhere, I'll look some more.

If I'm not mistaken Pan isn't open source and I don't want to become dependant on a program that may at some point no longer be developed or supported. I've had that experience with Forte Agent - whilst it is being developed it is taking very long and it is currently way behind many more recent newsreaders in terms of features.

Hmm, I think I'll give it a spin then, if you do find a ported Gravity please do let us know.

Here's a recent (today) update on BNR:

Okay, I decided to upload BNR3 0.3.0, as it looks like I'm busy with
other things besides BNR3 for at least this week, and it seems to
work pretty nicely in the limited tests I've done.

Again, do not delete your existing version of BNR3.EXE, as there
might be some new problems with this version.

The major change is that I moved the header expiration to happen
when BNR3 is idle (no data received and no user activity for at
least a minute). I also added a database precaching at startup,
which hopefully increases the header refresh speed. See the included
changes.txt for other changes.

I hope I have time to work on BNR3 some more during the next
weekend..

I think most is Win specific, but this show the continuing development on this app. Apr. 14h, 2004 is the date in the newest upload for Linux.

IMHO Knode is excellent, it has about every feature I can think of, and it never crashed on me. Very easy to use, too (unlike pan in my small experience with it - although that could be different now as that was a while ago). If you're a KDE user, you'll most probably like it, as it integrates well with the rest of the PIM suite.
