    USB camera (as user)

I have gtkam, gphoto and everything installed fine. As root I am able to connect to the camera, download the images and everything works fine. If I try using gtkam as a normal user, it seems like it can't talk to the camera although it is able to detect the model of my camera.

I have read things on http://www.xena.uklinux.net/Linux/powershot.html and it says

If you want to access the camera as a normal user, you will need to make the device world-writable by doing:

    su -c 'chmod a+w /proc/bus/usb/001/002'
I did that and it still does not work. Any suggestions? I can't seem to find exactly what I'm looking for.

I have a canon powershot s400 if that makes any difference (althought I don't think this is a problem to do with the camera.)

    Just a guess here.

Have you verified that '/proc/bus/usb/001/002' is the correct device your particular camera is using? Wouldn't you need to change the device in /dev and not /proc?

    USB camera (as user)

I happened to run into the same problem as you did, but solved as follows :

I am using Red Hat 9.0, the "digital camera tool" (gtkam) could be used by root user, but failed to add the camera as normal user.

Today, I log in as normal user and then open up one of the tools in system tools requiring root password. After entering the root password and closed the system tool, I get back to gtkam to add the camera, this time without the error "unable to initialize ... ".

Once the camera is added, I can use it to download pictures from my DC.
