    It's never too late.

Everyone should try Debian for 2 weeks (that's more than enough time to get hooked on it, I think).

Ummm... actually, I did install your "preferred distro". I actually used it for a long time. Guess what... I did install something else.

WHy? The main reason is because I prefer a wealth of packages over "./configure&& ./make&& ./make install".

(The secondary reasons only came to me gradually as I learned more about the system. There are a LOT of secondary reasons: deborphan, debfoster, dpkg-reconfigure, localepurge, cruft, apt-build, the list goes on and on...)

    Debian of course.

Maybe this should have been a poll?
Where are we going and why am I in this handbasket?

Only one.... man thats hard i use so many, only useing one flavor of linux seems like a waste.
I use RH for its stability, FC for the challlenge of getting the thing working, Suse, well Suse i recomemnd to lots of friends for a test run of linux. (After a live cd trial of couse) and oh the CD's dont know how I would get along with out PHLAK, or Knoppix STD, or just good old Knoppix for that matter. But if you held a gun to my head (either for my opinon or just to get me to shut-up) Id have to say that RH would come out on top. I just cant seem to find anything else that comes close to having ease of use, along with room to grow, from newb, to Guru.

    RedHat/Fedora Core

I was so used to RedHat before that whenever I tried some other distributions, I always came back.

I haven't found a distribution that is well tested on the server side as Red Hat/Fedora Core.

If you need to use both server AND desktop (I don't mean some simple web server or something, but some fairly complex client/server configuration) then Fedora Core is the way to go. For mission critical server environment, I would go for RHEL, but then my environment is not that critical.

But I do concur, for general-purpose desktop use, I am sure there are many distributions that are much better suited than FC.

It's just that RH/FC has their niche, and they fill my needs perfectly.

I used Red Hat and SuSE 9.0 for a while.. Now I'm using SLACKWARE 10 for a couple of weeks, and I can say that SLACK is the BEST for ME.

Ah, I can hear those Vikings singing:

    Sarge Sarge Sarge Sarge
    Sarge Sarge Sarge Sarge
    Lovely Sarge, Wonderful Sarge!

    (And then my wife says:
    "But I don't like Sarge!")

Note: I am not married. For purposes of this post "My wife" is a fictional character.

If you have broadband, the way to go is the debian-installer.
