New to linux with a few Questions
Well, as of 9/12/04 @1:33pm I installed and started working on Linux. I am wondering what I should know, for a new user, and if nothing else, any suggested readings to get on my feet and running. I only found out last night that I needed a compiler just to get back to my good old MUD's, Sadly all the clients I've downloaded and tried to intall, haven't worked, and I have done the ./configure make make install steps. I'm on SUSE Linux, which I've seen a few other's on here are one, and I've also noticed that people aren't too fond of KDE. Any help suggestions, or flames welcomed.

Congrats on the new install.
I found this pretty helpful in getting my head around some of it.
Sometimes when I reflect back on all the beer I drink I feel ashamed - Then I look into the glass and think about the workers in the brewery and all of their hopes and dreams. If I didn't drink this beer, they might be out of work and their dreams would be shattered. Then I say to myself, "It is better that I drink this beer and let their dreams come true than be selfish and worry about my liver."

I believe SUSE is RPM based, in which case I'd recommend using apt4rpm or yum or a similar tool, as these will download not only what you ask for and install it, but also automatically resolve dependencies.
A lot less hassle than building from scratch....

Normally this thread should be locked and the poster asked to start a new one with a more appropriate subject title...
But this turned out to be full of good info and the subject fits
Only thing really is to move this to /dev/random

has an rpm available, also there is kmud but it was built for KDE 1. If it was not already installed you will need to install the gnome desktop. The good thing is that if you have Kde and Gnome both installed, programs from each one will work on the other's desktop.
And folks who do not like KDE, really have not explored it very much. Some very good development taking place on KDE and it is much easier to work with than Gnome IMNSHO (in my not so humble opinion)

Suse has also got YOU, which is really good.
Also do yourself a favour and install the documents from the CD's, they are very helpful. Also install the user-guide and admin-guide, also from the cd's.
Good luck and stick with it!
As for KDE, I would say that it is easier for a Windows/Mac user to use, but it is also very resource hungry, so unless you have a decent machine, don't use KDE or GNOME.
