    Help Editing DOS exe file

I need help looking at an exe file that was written by a company that no longer exists. We have an automated machine that will pull cutting dies off a shelf. The company that wrote it went out of business just after they physically added more shelves that the software does not know exist. I have to imagine that it is pretty basic programming since it is a 44k file. I tried opening it in PE explorer, it says it is not PE executable, I also tried a program called LIST but it is not readable.

A DOS .exe file should be in binary and has little use to an average PC user. Then again there may be loads of reverse-engineers in this forum.

Any HEX editor should be able to open the file and edit it. I'm not sure how functional it will be.
