How Do You Install Firefox? Fedora
OK I have been looking all over and searched in justlinux for some help on installing firefox.
I am in the GUI and I click in the firefix. gz. It extracts and I see a firefox installer. Click on that and it opens fileroller with some kind of .ini file and nothing.
There isn't a readme or anything to help.
On one search for help I did the answer is
'give up and reboot to windows.'

Lets say you downloaded firefox to your /home.
What you need to do is load up a konsole/terminal, then use 'cd' to change to the directory:
cd /home/username/firefox-installer
Now if your going to install firefox anywhere apart from your /home then you will need to be root. To change to root you need to type:
su - <enter>
<enter root password>
You may have to change to the firefox directory again, anyway to install firefox you type:
./firefox-installer
This then loads the install program for you.

OK I did that. Now I have a lot of files. What do I do to run it?
I have a bunch of .xpi files, whatever they are.
I know I suck, I come from Windowland...

Did you install it in the same directory as the installer? It doesn't really matter but the installer suggest that you dont, AFAIK.
Anyway to run firefox as your user:
<in a konsole/terminal>
/path/to/install/firefox <enter>
for example
/home/Fishbones/firefox/firefox <enter>
You can then create a shortcut so you don't have to open a terminal each time to run firefox, if you dont want to create a shortcut you can always add the firefox directory to your path, so you just have to type firefox to run it.

ok I installed to /home/jethro/firefox
ran the ./firefox-installer
it comes up with
welcome to mozilla firefox NEXT
license agreement ACCEPT
setup type STANDARD with a destination dir of
/home/jethro/firefox
Now I have this in /home/jethro/firefox
[jethro@localhost firefox]$ ls -la
total 17752

long time never use
for a long time I have been playing around with linux, first redhat 7.2 unleashed from there ever so nicely built book, to Mandrake 9.2-10.0 to SUSE 8.0 to 9.0 pro, I have always used the RMP package base becuse it seems to be most like a windows exe for me, I have been battling TARs and Gzips for ever, I hope to see a good outcome......
GOOD LUCK!!!
as you can see at my website...im still dumbfounded by the file installation process.

Or you can try this.
From the home page, click Firefox to download. Download it to a folder you can make in your /home/yourname/
when its there, right click and select "extract here"
you will then see a new folder; inside that, there will be a setup file. Click on it.
Then its just like a windoze installer. Avoid the option to import faves and such from firefox/nutscrape unless you want to/know how. (otherwise it will take a long time. then you're done.

I tried that from the download too. I get a folder of crap like the one I listed above.
this firefox installer looks like it doesn't install anything anywhere.
Here is a question. IF this worked. what would br the filename be of the file you launch to start firefox? just firefox?
Does it have a file extension or anything?

I found the easiest way for me to get it was through apt while patching my latop up, so now it shows in /usr/bin/firefox for easy launching.
-
You could try this:
su
<enter password>
updatedb
locate firefox | less
The file you run is simply called firefox. I've got a box running Slackware which used the firefox installer and for me it is listed in the firefox-installer directory in my home directory.
The only other likely place would be /usr/bin I would think.

I believe the name could be mozilla-firefox as well. Maybe http://fedoranews.org/tchung/firefox/ is of any use? (google firefox 1.0 rpm)

locate firefox | less
there is no instance of a firefox
tons of folders and install programs containing the word firefox from me trying to install but no real firefox program.
-
You say that the installer doesn't look like it installs anything anywhere.
Does it complete without errors or does it say successful or what?

it acts like it's doing something then finishes I guess.
Now this is REDHAT FEDORA 2
I downloaded an rpm of firefox. You'll love this.
There is no action associated with firefoxblahblahblah.rpm

Could you please explain further how you did it through apt? Step-by-step perhaps? Thx.
