I end up using my computer for just about everything I do. I use it quite a bit for my IT courses, (Java and HTML/Unix, the Unix is really easy for me, I dont know why), serving files for said classes from across campus, starting to get into some web development stuff for other people, I use it to register for classes, buy books from the campus bookstore. And those are just the useful things!

Web, Gaim, email, and that is just about the sum of it.

We, of course, can assume that there's no cross-over in those categories???

Backups of the porn pictures of his sister in a slideshow set to music ripped from his CD's? Yes, for all our sakes, let's assume no crossover.

Edit: Oh, and I use mine for a little of everything. About the only thing I don't use it for is video editing because I don't have a camera that does decent video (My still camera takes videos, but they're not worth editing).

No! No crossover whatsoever! My sister got a digital camera and likes to take a ton of pictures, so my file server seemed like a logical place to store them. My stuff and her stuff are on completely seperate partitions, and the file permissions allow only myself into my porno partition.

My sister and I collectively store our music on the file server in the same partition so we can listen to each other's music.

Thanks for clearing that one up

I use it for R & D, because I run a company that provides Linux solutions...

Watching DVD's, although I just bought a DVD player, it is useful, when we go down to the coast....

Trying out new things, new apps, etc for clients.

E-mail, word processing, contract making, listening to music, copying CD's, etc, etc...

edit : Oh yes, and no porn....

Music, Game, Uni work, Learning to Programming/Scripts, Movies, Web, Email, Chatting, Reading, pretty much everything else above
If you have to ask why you want to install Linux, then perhaps you shouldn't.

Most of the above, aside from porn. Oh, and surfing - it doesn't float too well.

    Storing top secret files
    Scanning (Sane & Gimp)
    Telephone (Skype)
    Instant messaging (AMSN)
    E-mail (Evolution)
    Music (Xmms, Timidity, Rosegarden)
    Playing DVDs (Ogle)
    Web (Firefox, Opera, ssh, sftp)
Games (including the old favourite "which distro will work first?")
    Molecular modelling/rendering (Rasmol, Garlic)
Reading (Firefox, MC, Infobase under Dosemu)

I used to use it for upstaging smarty-pantses (as in, "Your new box takes how long to start up? My Pentium 1 could have booted, burned a CD, booked a ticket to Prague and poured you a drink in that time!") but it's not so much fun since I upgraded my box.

We are free to think. We are free to plan. And we are free to do. But once an action has been taken, we are never free from its consequences.
