Suse 9.1 login problems
hi all.
i have a bit of a problem logging into my linux box.
first i will tell you what i did before this problem started.
i was having problems with with my tv card (interferance) so i moved my pci tv card to the botom pci slot and moved my sound card up a pci slot and moved my wireless network card to the top pci slot.
i then go to reboot linux,
grub loads fine,
startup seems to be fine (as far as i can see there is no errors),
i get the logon screen and i type in my user name (root (root is the only account)) then i type in my password, i then click enter or login and the screen flickers like the xserver is restarting and then i am back to the logon screen. so basicly i cant get into kde gui.
but if i press ctrl+alt+f2 and login in the command prompt thing i have access to my files, but i need access to it in the gui kde.
hear are the things i have doon as an atempt to repair it.
i have put in disk 1 and booted from that, then loaded installation and ran an automatic repaire, it found three errors and repaired them, but i still have the same problem.
i would take a ges that is is a hardware problem as i did move pci cards around. i would not say it was the graphics card becouse i wouldent get into the logon thing.
can anybody help?
thanks in advance.

I hope you first switched off your computer and then swapped the cards?
It looks like kdeinit crashes for some reason. Strange error. Maybe there's some information in /var/log/kdm.log
You could try to login as root, kill kdm by `killall kdm` and use `startx` to go directly to the KDE environment, without kdm
You could also try another WM (like IceWM, install with rpm under commandline) to get into a gui and try commands like kde to get some usefull information

ye i had turned of my pc before playing around inside lol
i have also tryed other gui like ice and gnome etc but it is still the same.

During boot up do you see the nvidia splash screen? It sounds like the drivers are crashing the server. I had a problem similar to yours and had to reinstall Suse 9.1 pro to solve the problem. Also did you unplug the power supply while working on your box I always do that now when making hardware adjustments.

hi, yes i get the spash screen at boot.
also i am a computer student, before doing anything on my box i always disconect all power to the pc.
i also thought i may have to redo linux installation. do you think i should?

My experince was this I would make the suggested repairs over and over again and never resolve the problem. So i gave up reinstalled and everything worked right again. So this may be a viable option for you hope you wont lose to much data in the process.
-
and you can't find anything in the log files? startx doesn't work either?
of course reinstall is a good option if you are in a hurry but you still don't know what's wrong and it can happen again at any time...
-
I would remove the nvidia driver for now, just use the nv driver and then later reinstall the nvidia driver.
At least you would find out if it is the problem.
Go to" /etc/X11/XF86Config" at change "nvidia" back to "nv"

thanks for ya help people,
i tryed that grathics thing frimann said but it also did not work.
im in a bit of a hurry as i want to use my box again, i dont like this sluggy laptop im useing at the moment. I think I will reinstall linux suse. It seems to be the faster and easyer way to fix this problem. I wont loose anything doing this becouse i store everything on a seperate partition for situations like this.
this is the last time i move my hardware around, lol
thanks for ya help everyone.
