What software do i need to convert movie formats?

What I'm trying to do is find software that can convert pretty much any format into svcd mpeg. I can use vcdimager to make the final scvd.

I have found tons of guides online that either assume you are starting with a dvd or a capture from a tv tuner card. I have a few movies in random formats and compressions.

What I'm guessing needs to be done is to convert my movies into a more raw format and then make an mpeg from that, but I don't know what I should use to do that.

well, this is what i tried:
I took a movie (a divx encoded avi file), then did
mencoder movie.avi -oac lavc -ovc lavc -o test.avi
I took the resulting test.avi opened it in avidemux and changed the settings to SVCD for video and FFMpeg MP2 for audio and changed the output format to Mpeg A+V (PS). This then converted the movie to an svcd mpeg. I then made a bin/cue from vcdimager and burned it using k3b.

Finally, I did all this and when I went to play it in my dvd player it failed. It simply didn't start. I then tried playing the vcd in gmplayer and it worked fine except that it gave me the error "ioctl dif1: invalid argument".

Early today I took an mpeg file that was already in svcd format and that worked on my dvd player, so I know the dvd player can play svcds.

    Any suggestions?
