    Question ??? kde wont boot

tonight, i restarted my system out of linux and into windows, and i had no problems. now when i try to boot back into linux, while the "booting the system" splash is displayed (before logging in) at the end, the screen begins to flicker a few times, then it goes directly to only the command line. any suggestions as to how to get it to boot into kde again? thanks a lot.

    yeah...

    find the problem.
I'm betting you updated your video drivers or something...
Log in as your user and do
    startx

tell us if you get any errors and report back with the output from

    grep EE /var/log/X<something...your X logfile>

(insert your XFree86.log or Xorg.log file or whatever into the above.

hey, i booted and copied a few of the errors, here are some of them:

fatal I/O error 104): COnnection reset by peer on X server":0.0"\

after 0 requests (0 known processed) with 0 events remaining

however i think what you were asking for was:

(EE) Failed to load module "synaptics" (module does not exist,0)

i know that it's definitely the video driver because it had a bunch of stuff about my video card

    hmm...

There ought to be another EE line, with a more serious error in it. Do you have a synaptics touchpad?

yea, i do. and i earlier i was looking at the /etc/X11/Xorg.conf file to think about trying to add in the touchpad because id like to be able to use either the touchpad or a normal mouse however i didnt want to mess with it yet so i didnt modify it at all

if there was a more serious EE line, then i dont beleive i saw it. ill try checking again, but it goes off the screen and i cant pg up to see it

    these were in there also:

(EE) Failed to load module "/usr/X11RS/lib/modules/extentions/libglx.a" (once-only module, 135962511)
(EE) No input driver matching "synaptics"

which leads me to beleive that it's no recognizing my mouse, but i dont know how to fix that

    mmkay...

Something changed between the last time you booted to X and today. Things don't "just quit working", there has to be a reason. Try to think what you did....did you change something in the mouse section of your XF86Config or xorg.conf (or whatever)? What video card do you have? Is the module getting loaded?
    Check it out with lsmod.

    yeah...

I think the problem is in your xorg.conf.
By the way, does mandrake 10.1 use xfree86 or xorg?

the mouse driver that's being loaded is for the synaptic touchpad. it's never done that before. it usually only boots if i have the ps/2 mouse plugged in. but i tried unplugging the mouse to see if it would boot with the touchpad, and it did what it did before. it tells me to insert the installation disk 1 to install the new device, but even if i try inserting any of my mandrake cd's, it won't install. when i looked at xorg.conf it didnt show the ps/2 input device for the mouse. im not sure what now

So what do you have in your mouse section of xorg.conf?

    yeah but...

what device is it using? /dev/psaux? /dev/input/mouse0?
which is it? if you see which one, make sure it's working, do:
    cat /dev/psaux (for example)
and then move the mouse around...see junk onscreen? it's working. (control-C to kill that)

i tried the cat /dev/psaux and i moved the ps/2 mouse around, and it did work. there were scrammbled characters on the screen. when i did control c, the prompt was all in random characters too. i didnt try the cat /dev/mouse0. should i try it anyways even though the /dev/psaux did work?
