How are the new ATI drivers?
I've been using nVidia cards, but I noticed that ATI released new video drivers for linux that are supposedly much closer to their Windows drivers than before. Has anyone here with an ATI card tried the new drivers. Are they as easy to install and use as nVidia's? Should nVidia still be considered the linux video card by default only because of driver support?
-
Still a pain to install. Nvidia drivers are still a lot better. Ati drivers are only pacakged for Red Hat based distros. I was able to find a website that has it package for debian but I still had to unpack the rpm to get the module (I couldn't get it to compile).
-
I am running SuSE 9.3 and I find it great, I have very smooth graphics. Was a litle bit complex to install the driver, but then I have had issues installing nVidia drivers on one or two machines as well...
Feel free to PM me for help

you think wrong. It's not a pain at all.

how are they not a pain getting 3d acceleration to work right?

why should it be a pain?
it was a pain untill 10 monthes ago or so . I did not have problems getting 3d accel to work since that time. Other than a little X bug that its now fixed my 9600 XT powers a dual monitor set up and gives me 95fps average when playing UT2004
Mobility X600 works good too -- no problems.

well it doesnt work to well for me -=<

What card do you have? Is it even supported by the drivers?
what does "modprobe fglrx" do, errors? Anything from dmesg about the driver?
Do you have MTRR enabled in the kernel?
Complaining for the sake of complaining won't get it working
-
running "modprobe fglrx" gives me no errors, MTRR is enabled in the kernel and dmesg doesnt show up with anything.
oo and yes my card is supported its a 9600 pro radeon.

ooo and forgot to mention running glxinfo it says direct rendering is enabled, and running fglrxinfo i get :
OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: RADEON 9600 Generic
OpenGL version string: 1.3.5140 (X4.3.0-8.14.13)
running glxgears gives me 1000-3500 fps but in about a minute or so my computer will lock up.
and when looking at /var/log/XFree86.0.log i get:
(WW) warning, (EE) error, (NI) not implemented, (??) unknown.
(WW) Open APM failed (/dev/apm_bios) (No such device)
(WW) fglrx: No matching Device section for instance (BusID PCI:1:0:1) found
(WW) fglrx(0): Cannot read colourmap from VGA. Will restore with default

Wow....
ATI Radeon 9800
debian 2.6.8 kernel...
downloaded ati-driver.xxxx
chmod +x
ran it...
next next next
exited X
ran /usr/X11R6/bin/fglrxconfig, answered some questions (mostly defaults)
had to fix my XF86Config for my mouse but now:
fglrxinfo:
display: :0.0 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: RADEON 9800 Pro Generic
OpenGL version string: 1.3.5140 (X4.3.0-8.14.13)
2068 frames in 5.0 seconds = 413.600 FPS
3058 frames in 5.0 seconds = 611.600 FPS
3926 frames in 5.0 seconds = 785.200 FPS
3186 frames in 5.0 seconds = 637.200 FPS
3424 frames in 5.0 seconds = 684.800 FPS
I'm guessing those are good numbers as someone else posted 95fps.
Im impressed with ATI's attention to open source..
TIme to test out AA now!!!
-
95fps when playing a game , not in glxgears
glxgears is just there to tell you if you got 3d accel or not...
your scores are super low...
mobility X600 results
18686 frames in 5.0 seconds = 3737.200 FPS
18683 frames in 5.0 seconds = 3736.600 FPS
18682 frames in 5.0 seconds = 3736.400 FPS
download the ut2004 demo and do a time demo test
see what you get

Did you get the ati-driver-installer, or the RPM? My assumption is you ran the installer.
Just downloaded the installer (and RPM just in case) and am fixing to run the installer on my Slackware 10.1 system. Will let yall know how it goes.
