Don't Look Now :o (or, Here we go again)
Posted below are the actual commands input into debian, and about as much as I was able to catch, of the exact responses received from each command
Oh, and about those three commands having a capital letter in them, that's only because I composed the post in an auto-grammar-correcting program, and ...well. It auto-grammar-corrected. lol

This... is what I got the last time around as well.(more or less) And so... I as I sat there ready to enter the third and last command of the test:
(debian~# dpkg-reconfigure x-window-system) something in my head clicked and told me to stop trying to run to other people without giving a good shot at it myself. That's when with one last hope left in my heart, I entered the command one more time,
debian:~# apt-get install x-window-system
And then I waited...
It happened too fast for me to catch after that, but pretty soon, I was being asked to configure x and "which window manager I would most prefer"
And so I went along with the whole process feeling real smart and proud of my ability...
all the way into the "Configure monitor settings"(I think it was xfree86) where I promptly decided to look up the horiz. and vert. refresh rates of my monitor. Of course, I felt even smarter when I did find one site that listed my monitor model, along with the refresh rates. Well of course with all that info how could I not help hitting the advanced option and entering the refresh rates
So that took care of that, and before I knew it, all the basic packages were installed
debian~# reboot
This system is going down for system halt now!
Power down.

you guessed it "Xfree86"
Boy did I feel Dumb then
So here I am (again), surfing aimlessly through random webpages, trying to solve the problem all by myself.
I do hope there's someone that knows more about this then I do.

Oh, ya, one more thing...je_fro>...about Gentoo, I heard only once before that it took that long to compile... but .he. I thought the guy was pulling my leg.
Well nevermind all that. I happen to be a very patient person. Just so long as I don't have to sit in front of the monitor watching it compile(without getting paid), AND I’ve got another computer to work on in t he meanwhile , well if you tell me that Gentoo is worth the wait, I might actually consider installing it.
Thanks to All,
Y.H.

Concerning Gentoo:
-X takes about 24h to compile (on a PIII/450MHz). You can go away from the computer while it compiles - the Gentoo handbook even advices when to eat lunch and take naps.
-Gentoo is easy to use for novice users as they hardly ever see below the surface - all they have to cope with is the shiny desktop/windowmanager you install for them.
-Gentoo can be a bastard for a sys admin when something doesn't work because you're the one supposed to fix it. Gentoo is awful for people who want a computer that "just works". Gentoo is wonderful for people who can't get things to "just work" because some automatic configuration tool screws up so they want the control of going through every step manually. The documentation is good and the Gentoo forum is helpful, but it takes patience.
There is noone here in the forums who can tell you what distro you *have* to install, although we all think our distro of choice is the best, of course.

To Mess or Not to Mess?
Thanks for the tip, Parcival--I do appreciate it. And I guess your'e right, it's definitely a case of each to his own
Now, about the problems I've been having: It turns out that my aimless wandering actually did me some good in the long run. I learned a few new things and then proceeded to spend the rest of my afternoon messing with "xf86config" but to no avail.
Anyways, if someone would kindly like to volunteer to help me I think this might help:

Totally off topic, but...
As Je_Fro said in his sig..
"Andrew Morton on RMS (etc)"
I was walking on the streets of Oulu, and I notÃ*ced the manhole covers were made by a company that put their initials on them.
RMS
I must post a photo sometime. Made me chuckle! (If you're reading this Richard, sorry! ;-) Meant in good humour

Thanks 4 the tip

I appreciate the suggestion you made about obtaining a miniature linux. It really is a tempting prospect (to be able carry linux in my wallet), saves me from any computer I might come across running Windoze

IMHO, Slackware with XFCE would be a great choice for this PC. This opinion is based on my experience with the following two systems:
Compaq Presario 2285V
250MHz Cyrix processor
128MB RAM
Slack 10.1 with KDE (Eyecandy turned way down)
MSI Barebones Desktop
Celeron 466MHz processor
128MB RAM (64 at time of install)
Slack 10.1 with KDE (some eyecandy, but not much)
With the specs you gave, you should be able to get Slack up and running with no problem, then bump the memory to 256MB as soon as you can. To test this theory, try the Slax Live CD, either Standard or Popcorn editions. The downloads are small (under 200MB) and they are Slackware based so you will get a good idea about support for your particular hardware.
Good luck!

With a swap partition, you can get away with as little as 48MB RAM for Puppy Linux, and it will STILL load into RAM. That's what I'm using in an old IBM Aptiva I found in a dumpster-diving expedition. It works -- quite well in fact. DamnSmall also works in that unit. Slax Popcorn (even using Fluxbox) is a little much for it.

Proposed Closure
To All:
There is a policy regarding posting threads in which it states: if the context of a thread changes, so that the title of the thread no longer accurately reflects upon the context of the thread, it is suggested that the thread be concluded and that a seperate, dedicated thread be started, if the subject has not been yet addressed in any other thread.
I believe that my last few posts regarding refresh rates fall into that category. I will try to resolve the problem of refresh rates on my own,(experimenting-using vertical refresh 50-100 as a constant and horizontal refresh as a variable) and, then maybe post a thread if my efforts prove completely fruitless. (I already tried inputting "20-170" and it didn't work)
I am thankful to all those that have provided solutions and suggestions for all of my problems that were originally posted.
Note: This Closure is NOT official until 1 or more moderators post a message agreeing with this post.
Oh' and thanks to everyones good advice I just purchased a stack of RAM with which to upgrade my computers.
Sincerely,
Y.H.

Meh...If you're satisfied with the results, just edit the title adding [SOLVED] in front.

I'm still working on figuring out how to edit the thread title to include the term [SOLVED]. It may take some time. sorry for my ignorance.

Well, it's not your mistake as you can't edit the thread title, only the title of the first post. (when the first post is published, the thread title is made the same as the post title, but afterwards only mods can change the thread title, even if the user modifies the 1st post title)
I also had to shorten your title to add the [SOLVED] because it already had the max number of possible chars.

lol,
Thanks, Parcival.
