Okay, that looks good for firefox.
Did you "chmod +x" the thunderbird file?

Maybe this is a stupid question but...

Why aren't you using Synaptic to install your software? One of the main reasons that Ubuntu is cool (i.e. people like it) is that it uses a nice graphical tool (Synaptic) to install software packages from the Ubuntu repositories which keeps all the versions of software in line and working properly together. Ubuntu will add thunderbird and firefox to the menus automagically when you use Synaptic to install software.

Yeah, I know that "looks good for firefox" there is just one little problem though, it doesn't work. It did the last time that I upgraded, but not this time.

I dumped Thunderbird and have Balsa up and running. I tried every suggestion in this thread to no avail and decided that I didn't need Thunderbird that badly!

    Thanks, zoey

    Yup. It is.

I think that my computer has flipped out. Balsa has started playing a tune and telling me verbally when mail arrives. It didn't do that before!?! This is getting interesting.

About synaptic: I do use it, but the only firefox available to ubuntu warty is version 9.3. Warty is supported only for security upgrades at this point and ubuntu hoary doesn't like my onboard audio. Adding the hoary repositories to synaptic causes all kinds of dependency problems.

    Thanks, zoey

My suggestion is to go ahead and upgrade to hoary, and then come to us for help with your sound problem. sound problems tend to be a little easier to explain/fix

Thanks, I appreciate the suggestion, but I have already done battle with the sound in hoary. I am not the only one. There is quite a bit of discussion about the problem in the ubuntu forum.

I did have one victory today. I figured out how to overwrite the obnoxious 'new mail' sound file in balsa.

if i remember right, if you install thunderbird from mozilla.org it doesnt put the executable in /usr/bin/thunderbird. It puts in where you extracted it(ie./home/user)

I think on my old install it was in /home/user/thunderbird

so to use it was ./home/user/thunderbird/thunderbird
