Running debian here, and xine has always seemed to play well. And I don't have 3d acceleration enabled.

If a video application is skipping using xv or some other video overlay and trying to use X11 directly then it's going to be slow. Try forcing xv (xine -V Xv and mplayer -vo xv IIRC) and see if that helps.

Don't be cheap, buy a graphic card. Anything would do it, a "good" one is under $50

heh, good question. well it isn't 3d-acceleration for sure... 3d has nothing to do with video playback of movies, etc.

I've done Debian on my PII 400Mhz and video plays back better for me in linux. I'm using Xfree86 though (I'm in Debian Stable). If ur having trouble with sound in other places (XMMS, etc) It might be sounds is being processed incorrectly. It happened to me on my AMD machine. If your using a GUI, under the kcontol panel look under sound and see if hardware accleration is on. I turned it off and video plays smooth now on my AMD. Good luck!

solved!
i got an SiS 315pro for cheap, and it works great with the X open source drivers. cpu usage is around 20% (compared to 100% before) and no skipping!
