    Powerup problem - Emachine P3

    stats:

    P3 800 mhz
    256 kb l2 cach3
    64 mb sram
    30gb hdd

Problem: plug it in and it powers on despite power switch on front, fans for power supply and cpu run. doesn't do anything else. power button on front doesn't do anything. no reset button on the back. no indicator light present on motherboard for possible errors. So, power is being fed to the motherboard but that's it. My hunch is either a bad power supply or bad motherboard.

Anyone have a hunch? Thanks in advance.

All I've done is plug it in, take off the outer shell to see the innards. I reseated the memory module, all the plugs going to the mainboard, as well as the drive. Made sure it wasn't a loose connection anywhere.

take the memory out and try to get some post codes out of it

failure to post errors is a sign of a bad mobo, though not conclusive mind you

I just pulled everything minus power/monitor. Still blank screen. I'm stuck with the thought that the mboard is dead.

Sounds dead to me. Pulling the RAM out, and not hearing any beep codes is usually the deal-breaker right there. If you yanked that, and are running bare-bones with no beep codes, you should be looking at replacing that board.

Thanks for confirming it. I'm going to salvage what I can and use the rest as an anchor.
