Yes, so the elves in its case get their well deserved break.

No, you must run it until the power dies and makes the disk crash, and you lose data!

    Err... wait a minute...

(For the record: I don't care whether you turn your computer off or not. Make sure you do a clean shutdown -- or at least mount all your disks read-only -- first, though.)

Ooooooooooohhhh. A dead split as of my vote for no. If you shut it down it can't do any good.

I vote for Yes but i`m not sure if I shut down clean will all the hardware will have a chance to break down faster in future?

    Hmm...

I'd have asked "Is it ok to leave my computer on all the time?" instead, hehe.

A clean shutdown makes sure the integrity of your data on your harddrives is okay. That's why you are not supposed to directly cut off the power. Things can get especially nasty when you are writing to a disk when the power loss occurs, that can damage the entire drive.

Now for the question wether it's okay to leave a computer running: it depends on what kind of harddrives you have in your case. If you have ordinary IDE harddrives and leave your computer on all the time, you are going to loose them after one or two years because they are not built for this kind of strain. However, we are talking of something else if you're running a Sun server with SCSI harddrives, for example. Those are very reliable and still do their job after years online.

Interesting. The WD 20G that's sitting in my firewall/router box must be better than most other IDE disks, because it's been running pretty much nonstop for about 4 years now. And it had been used off and on for about a year before then.

    Huh.

(Note: I wouldn't put any required data on a disk that you decide to do this to. My router image can be replaced in a pretty short time if the drive fails. My opinion of IDE drive quality is still pretty low, even with one drive like the above.)

    Hmmm

I have several drives, standard IDE, that have been running for years. 20GB up to 120GB, the 120GB has been running for 10 months and not a hiccup. I have an old work horse with 3 40GB Maxtor drives, that only gets shut down when power goes out (UPS will take if off line if power isn't restored before the battery dies) and they been running for almost 3 years (well except when I was moving and stuff...)

Keep it running, use UPS and open the case occassionally and blow it out. What's the problem?
