Apache as a file server? Does anyone know how?

I have heard that you can setup Apache as a file server in place of an NFS system? I have googled for this but not found any information. Has anyone set this up before or possibly have a link to a website or thread where I can get more information?

WebDAV perhaps? I have no idea how to set it up, I just know what it is.

Why would you want to use Apache for this anyway?

That's an awful lot of trouble to go through to avoid setting up NFS exports.

I had just hear rumors of this and was wanting to get more information about it. I guess you don't know how it performs until you try it, or talk to someone who has set it up and seen how it performs. Has anyone set it up that can tell me how well it works? (and not just speculate)
