    Installation source server not working in Yast?

    Is anyone having trouble with the installation source server? I'm getting an error that it cannot find cd1. Is the server down or a maybe a bug?

    Here is the message:

    *********************************************
    Cannot access the installation media
    SUSE LINUX 10.1 CD 1.
    Check that the server is accessible.

    Curl error for: http://download.opensuse.org/distrib...r/packages.sk: Error code: HTTP response: 403 Error message: The requested URL returned error: 403
    *********************************************

    Thanks for any help

    Having trouble getting things to work on SUSE 10.1

    Ok, I've always been a Windows person and just recently decided to install SUSE 10.1.

    Needing help with this:

    1. My NEC dvd drive is not showing under 'computer' (funny because after a hardware scan it says that its there!)

    2. Could someone tell me how to install 'mplayer'? I don't know how to install a .tar file.

    Also, I found 'how to hack linux' on the Jem persons website so I can watch an .avi file and maybe update my nvidia drivers. When I change the installation source to the web servers-its missing the cd 1 disk and displays a 404 error. Is the server down? Bug?

    Does anyone know if the versions that you can buy (e.g. Redhat etc) or another version that is not under the DCMA reform?

    Any help is very much appreciated

    You need to forget everything you know about windows...it's only going to hurt you here.

    mplayer can play just about any file you throw at it.

    I think YOU need to put your CD1 disk in the drive...I think that's what it's looking for. I've never used yast, so I'm not sure.

    Try to use Yast to install mplayer, it's a lot easier than compiling the source in a .tar file.

    There's another thread where someone is having a similar problem. Apparently a file called packages.sk is missing from the opensuse.org server. Try pointing YaST at one of the mirrors and see if that works.

    If you want multimedia support, you're going to have to add the Packman repository to YaST, full multimedia support is not included in the base distro.

    Another person is having a similar problem. Try changing YaST to point at one of the mirrors and see if that helps.

    Read that link and install "smart" package manager, it will setup mirrors for you so you just have to hit the update channels button and search for mplayer and install, allso hit the upgrade all packages putton and you will get windowscodecs and the ability to play almost anything. You vill not get the ability to play dvd for that you nead a package called libdvdcss, you cann find it here "http://download.videolan.org/pub/libdvdcss/1.2.9/rpm/"

    Yes, I'm a moderator. Perhaps try this repository for mplayer:

    Good luck with your new OS.

    I merged these threads because it doesn't make sense to have the same discussion in 2 different threads

    Huge patches were made for SuSE 10.1

    SuSE 10.1 needs to be updated threw yast for it to work correctly. It was released with a buggy package manager, and many other problems.

    To update you need to go to Yast2 and run the "Update Configuration", once it's done finding you an update mirror, you go to yast2's "Online Update", and make sure the "libzypp" patch is there. Install it, and your good to go. Install sources will work, zen-update, zen-install, and zen-remove are all working fine now.

    Also check out: http://software.opensuse.org/download/

    You can add things like the latest version of KDE to your installation source, and zen-update will make sure your KDE is up to date, along with many other things.

    To add the latest version of KDE to your installation source just enter the URL of "http://software.opensuse.org/download/KDE:/KDE3/SUSE_Linux_10.1/" into your installation sources in Yast2. Once you do you'll notice the Zen Updater informing you of the latest version of KDE 3.5.3 is ready to download, and install. If your feeling really brave the first alphas of KDE 4 are in threre too.

    First, open Yast, Software, then Install Sources.
    1. Disable "cd devices, etc etc".
    2. Add the following sources:
    HTTP = "download.opensuse.org (then as directory) distribution/SL-10.1/non-oss-inst-source/"
    HTTP = "suse.cs.utah.edu (then as the directory)suse/update/10.1/" OR
    HTTP = "suse.mirrors.tds.net (and as directory) pub/suse/update/10.1/"
    HTTP = "packman.rsync.zmi.at (and as directory) suse/10.1".
    3. Enable refresh for each of the enabled sources.
    That should get you most of the update and non_OSS packages available.
