    Mysterious 20gb on my harddrive.

I have 68 gb of information in my home folder, I know that much thanks to nautilus. Is there any way that I can audit the rest of my hard drive to know where the other 20gbs are going to. I am relatively sure its not the OS because that would be rediculous. I guess what I would love is an app that can scan the HD and give me some usefull info

    god bless

UPDATE: Also if you guys done't mind a little tack on to that question, I have an extra 7 gigs on the end of the drive I was saving for some other OS work im not going to be doing any time soon. and I was wondering if its possible to merge it with the the first 100gigs. Heres the setup

    <-----------------------------------------------------------><--><---->
100gigs (first question) swap extra hd space.

I think this should be possible by simply increasing the partition size right? and then making the end part the swap.

    thanks

du -h in your root may help.

You could use gparted to move your swap parition to the end of the drive and then expand the rest of the space.
If you have to ask why you want to install Linux, then perhaps you shouldn't.

You make it sound so easy deathadder

du -h will only tell you how much is being used, but not where or what. I like ]url=http://kdirstat.sourceforge.net/]kdirstat [/url] to find where all my drive space is.

And for merging the extra space, Qtparted is a good tool to use but you need to have the drive unmounted which means you'll need to boot a rescue CD or a LiveCD.

The you also have to be sure that the filesystem you used is resizable, check the chart for gnu parted for any special details for this.

ok, that was EXACTLY what I was looking for icarus. Thanks a ton. Any suggestions as to a low MB download for using gnuparted... does DSL have it?

    thanks

Another question to go with the above, now for some reason my swap isn't working, though its the same hda5 it was before and its named in fstab as such. Any ideas on how to solve this?

    thanks

    swapon /dev/hda5

If it's not in your /etc/fstab add it yourself.

    cat /proc/meminfo | grep SwapTotal

That will tell if there is any active, if not serz has that part

I can't find any small LiveCDs with parted, even though I could have sworn they had one on the qtparted site, but I can't find it anymore

/me adds that to list for a small LiveCD package...

    I try

To be honest I had no idea about kdirstat, I think I'm going to have to look for something similiar but GTK based

I wish there was, if you do stumble across one let me know, this is one of the few KDE apps that keeps me compiling kdelibs what seams to be monthly these days
