I have rebuilt my humble Linux workstation, originally purchased as a system in 1998 three times -- but only the case and, amazingly, the floppy drive survive from that time; it has a 2.0-GHz Pentium-4 processor (without hyperthreading) and 1 MB of RAM, which everyone tells me is enough.

The Dell Dimension 8300 has a poorly ventilated case, but a 3.0-GHz Pentium 4 with hyperthreading, and 1 MB of RAM. (I'd really like to use this computer as parts for a new system, but I lack any funds right now.)

I am sure that I will have other questions about Kanotix Linux, bosox79, but -- as you point out -- a new thread would be appropriate.

Thank you very much for your assistance and helpful attitude, bosox79!

    Cordially,

    David
David given the specs of your workstation I do not forsee you having any major issues running Kanotix but the live CD should answer any of those questions

It worked the first time I installed 10.1 remastered. In regard to the ipod problem, I believe the HAL drivers were updated in 10.1 (Just a guess). I don't have any problems with removing USB thumb or hard drives, or my ipod. I am looking forward to 10.2 - Beta 1 seems pretty stable to me. I love the redesigned Gnome and KDE menus!

But, while I do love SUSE, Fedora Core 6 looks pretty appealing as well!

Thank you for your assessment and your message.

I need to visit the Kanotix Linux Web site so that I can download the ISO for the "live" CD.

Thank you very much, again, bosox79!

Thank you for the summary. I am glad that your very first installation of SuSE 10.1 remastered was a success!

I am glad that your iPod and USB drives are all working properly. I remember that SuSE Linux (before the acquisition by Novell) was one of the first distributions to provide reliable support for USB drives. I recall plugging in a Zip 250 drive and having SuSE Linux Professional immediately detect it, automount it, and display the icon on my KDE desktop (much faster than Windows had done with the very same drive).

If all goes as scheduled, SuSE Linux 10.2/openSuSE 10.2 will be out in one month and a week -- 13 December 2006!

Please keep us posted on how Fedora Core 6 is working for you, afterburntdw. I would be interested in learning your favorite aspects of FC 6 and how it compares to the other distributions that you are using.

    Thank you, afterburntdw!

Just a minor point - Opensuse 10.2 should be out on December 7th. I would die if it was a week longer!

I was given the date of 13 December by Andreas Jaeger, a SuSE developer in Nuremberg, Germany.

Obviously, Novell is planning to release 10.2 a week soon than was originally planned!

If I recall correctly, Debian 4.0 ("Etch") was originally scheduled for release on 6 December.

If both of these dates are accurate and do not change, there is going to be quite a bit of ISO downloading on December 6-7, and beyond!

Thank you for the correction, afterburntdw!

I do actually have a question, Bosox.

Is the "live" Kanotix ISO the "Lite" ISO? I saw no reference on the Kanotix Web site to a "live" CD specifically, and there appears to be a new release in the works, which adds to my confusion.

Thank you very much, in advance, Bosox!

Hello David I am sorry for not being clear
    ops

kanotix no matter which version you download is a live CD that gives you the ability too install to the HD .
I would recommend downloading 2006-01-RC4 that is the most current release

You do not owe me an apology, Bosox. I "wandered into" the Kanotix Linux Web site and failed to realize that any version is a "live" version.

I will download 2006-01-RC4, as you recommend!

Thank you very much for your help, Bosox.

Thank you for your encouragement and for your assistance.

My schedule for the next week or so is going to be a bit hectic. Without bothering everyone with my personal life, I am doing several things to help my uncle (Gary) who is battling cancer. Between the chemotherapy and "cancer fatigue," he stays exhausted, although he is still working as a teacher of music. Anyway, I will be spending some time with him in doctors' offices and three full days helping him at school.

I look forward to burning the Kanotix CD, Bosox, however. Even if I cannot spend much time testing it right now, I can at least enjoy it for shor periods!

I look forward to providing you with a fuller report soon, Bosox.

I am planning on installing multiple Linux distributions, thanks to patient and detailed help and advice from saikee. Debian "Etch" and SuSE Linux will probably be my main "production" distributions, but I plan to install Kanotix, Bosox, if it is compatible with my workstation's hardware. I am especially impressed by the fact that Kanotix is so stable for you.

I will definitely enjoy myself, Bosox. Whenever a boot from a "live" CD of a distribution that I have never tried, I feel as if I am opening a present!

Again, Bosox, thank you for all of your encouragement and help!

    Cordially,

    David

P.S. -- Bosox, I hate to continue to stray off-topic, but approximately how much hard disk space does a "typical" Kanotix installation require? Thank you!
