    the output of sudo dhclient ath0, as follows

    DHCPDISCOVER on ath0 to 255.255.255.255 port 67 interval 16
    DHCPDISCOVER on ath0 to 255.255.255.255 port 67 interval 4
    No DHCPOFFERS received.
    No working leases in persistent database - sleeping.

    actually, this depends on your wireless settings. was it on dhcp before?

    can you try using static ip?

    it worked on dhcp in ubun 5.10 and its always dhcp in windoze,if I change to static, what ip should I assign to the pc,

    actually if you are running your own network, dhcp will work with static. just find out what ip your computer usually uses and just use that in linux.

    dhcp is very useful, but I always seem to have trouble with it.

    thinking about it, was iwconfig correctly set up when you did that? because if its not done correctly its not going to work.

    and was the wep key used for iwconfig in the right format?

    I cannot contiue with this issue as my hdd has failed, I would like to thank all for their support this is easily one of the best forums for support
    thanks also XiaoKJ for the last couple of posts,I hope to get back on track with this as soon as I get another hdd.
