Use your distro's package manger to install the win32 codecs package, if it's there. Alternatively grab the codecs from mplayers website, they're what I used while I was running Totem, now I just use mplayer, it's much better IMHO.

    Link for codecs: http://www.mplayerhq.hu/design7/dload.html

They need to be extracted to /usr/lib/win32 from what I remember, as root.

If you have to ask why you want to install Linux, then perhaps you shouldn't.

If you're wanting to play DVDs (and aren't in the US ) then you'll also need the libdvdcss packages for decrypting DVDs.

I installed VLC. it installed all the necessary codecs, and viola, allmedia now plays.

Also install mozilla-mplayer for watching online video content.

Im not quite sure of this. I remember having them in /usr/lib/win32 some years ago, then the package maintainer (i was using ubuntu at time) moved them to /usr/lib/codecs (which is the default location mplayer and xine as in debian builds currently looks for them) . If you compile the player and install the codecs yourself (not via system's package manager) then the correct location would be /usr/local/lib/codecs
