    Setting up xfonts-scalable (1.0.0-6) ...
    usage error: unrecognized option
    Usage: update-fonts-dir DIRECTORY ...
           update-fonts-dir { -h | --help }
    This program is a wrapper for mkfontdir(1x) that is primarily useful to Debian
    package maintainer scripts. See update-fonts-dir(8) for more information.
        -h, --help display this usage message and exit
    dpkg: error processing xfonts-scalable (--configure):
     subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 2
    Errors were encountered while processing:
    E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)
    When I search for the error online most of the advice is toforce remove the offending package. So I do "apt-get -f remove xfonts-scalable". And I get this error:
    HTML Code:
    root@ubuntu:/# apt-get -f remove xfonts-scalable
    Reading package lists... Done
    Building dependency tree... Done
    Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
    requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
    distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
    or been moved out of Incoming.
    Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that
    the package is simply not installable and a bug report against
    that package should be filed.
    The following information may help to resolve the situation:
    The following packages have unmet dependencies:
      openoffice.org-l10n-en-gb: Conflicts: openoffice.org-core (>= 2.0.3) but 2.2.0-1ubuntu3 is to be installed
      openoffice.org-l10n-en-za: Conflicts: openoffice.org-core (>= 2.0.3) but 2.2.0-1ubuntu3 is to be installed
    E: Broken packages
    Anybody familiar with apt-get that could help me with this? Thanks.

    it looks like OO depends xfonts-scalable and this is why your getting the error when removing the package

    the first thing I would do is fix any broken packages using synaptic the fix broken packages option is under the edit menu

    Next I would try to force install xfonts-scalable again and then try the apt-get upgrade again you may have to attempt to force install apt-get upgrade more then ounce

    hope that helps

    lets try this sudo apt-get --purge xfonts-scalable this will fully remove the package from your system

    then reinstall xfonts-scalable then attempt the upgrade again

    It's probably worth doing an apt-get dist-upgrade too, and maybe apt-get -f install (with no package name) to make sure everything is complete.
