Cool Buying Music Online with Linux: Solved

I decided to see if the new DRM free offerings from Apple were available to a poor second class Linux citizen (LOL) and the answer is no, you still have to have iTunes installed. Here's an excerpt from the blog entry I just wrote.

    http://mostly-linux.blogspot.com/200...ux-solved.html

I started researching iTunes to see about the DRM free content, however, Linux is still excluded. You can't even browse without downloading and installing iTunes and of course, that is only OS-X or Windows. When I Googled for "Linux DRM free downloads" I saw a news entry on Walmart. I checked it out and all I can say is, this is the service I have been looking for.

Create your own Mixed CD at Walmart

I just finished picking 20 songs (the max per CD) and it came out to $1.16 per song. I will get an actual CD, cover and shipping included. Yes, I check out eTunes but I have a hard time finding enough to buy. At WallyWorld, you get access to their complete library.

Anyway, just bought 20 songs of my choosing with PCLinuxOS and FireFox with xine wmv plugin with no sweat. Yes, it is not instant gratification with buying online, but getting exactly what you want, on our own terms, I think that would apply to most everyone here.

I put this in random, and I hope this isn't an inappropriate post.

P.S. Yes, I could have LimeWired every single song I just purchased, but that isn't me, I will pay for the music I enjoy, but ONLY on my own terms.

Of course, you could also download free music in a free format like ogg.

    I particularly like:

And if you like it, make a donation straight to the artist. No need for the anti-competitive music industry oligopoly to take 90% of the profit. Plus you'll never have to worry about Nazis kicking in your dorm room door.

Just to clarify, thought it seems benign to buy music for $1 a song, think where the money is really going. A portion of it goes to people who are spying on your internet usage. Another piece goes to lawyers who want to sue you for using bittorrent. And since you're paying taxes at Walmart, some of it even goes to the Nazi who are drooling over the prospect of kicking in your door and sticking a gun in your face. Not to mention the cut the recording industry and Walmart get.

I really have nothing against paying for music. But unfortunately only a few cents of that dollar is actually for the music itself. The rest of it goes to pay people I don't like and could really do without.

I agree with most of what you say. The RIAA is taking 90% and a few dribs and drabs trickle down to the artist. There is only so much a person can do though. If available, I will buy direct from the artist at their website. I scan eTunes frequently, and there the artist gets a much better share. I will never purchase a DRM infected tune, I refuse to support that business model.

I will, however, purchase DRM free CDs when there is enough to justify buying it. Picking your own music to put on the CD means that all 20 songs are what you want.

Some more from a band called Realisation.
    Techno/Rave:

    Ethereal:

And though I personally can't stand death metal, these guys make whole albums available in ogg format:

Also, if you're in the market for a new player, iRiver sells some nice ones that play ogg files:
