    Why not use VNC?

wouldn't VNC require installing something on the XP side?

rdesktop/tsclient should connect just fine without additional software and looks much nicer than xrdp from the screenshot on the xdrp website

yup, you're right. It would require installing the vnc-viewer on the XP machine and vnc-server on the linux machine. I guess if it's possible to accomplish remote connections without the use of additional software, it would probably be a preferred way.

VNC still might be worth considering if for some reason the other software causes too many headaches to set up properly. I guess what I'm saying is....use the one that actually works the way you want

Sorry if this drifts too far off the original topic, but has anyone else tried NX from NoMachine, instead of VNC? The free server version allows 2 concurrent sessions per server, and the clients are available for all major OSs. I like it better than vnc for speed on a slow network, better copy/paste into your remote desktop, and better window sizing and resolution matching.

I've been meaning to try NX out for a while now but just haven't gotten around to it yet.

Why not putty (ssh)? If you absolutely need to run X programs, you can forward the X session through the putty connection (and run an X server on XP -- Cygwin's works fine for me).

Yeah, I use Cygwin for lots of other stuff already, so when I needed an X server, I just used the one that it has. Looks like xming would work fine for that as well.
