how to open an application
Good Evening,
It seems I just dont get it. Everytime I download an application, either I cant find it, or if I do, I dont know how to install or use it. Im always asking the forum how to do this. Non the less.. I downloaded the KDE application: KDE 4.0.72, an upgrade to a previous version. (260MB). Its sitting in /usr/src directory. Now what? In the future I would like to understand this process. Thank you for your help.......Rich

Here are the installation instructions supplied by the KDE people:
http://docs.kde.org/development/en/k...q/install.html

If you obtain the package via the Package Manager then it will do all the donkey work for you.
If you download it yourself then you take the matter into your own hand and have to follow the instructions supplied with the software, as whawk has indicated.

AND you have to be sure you keep up with any patches, updates, new versions, etc. that the KDE people distribute. You do not want to take this on lightly; it's a lot of work.
On the other hand, if you install your distro's package for KDE 4, then you let them keep up with the patches and updates and whatnot for you. Win-win.
(Well, unless your distro doesn't have a package for KDE 4. But if that's the case, then it's probably because your distro has decided that KDE 4 isn't for its users (or "isn't for its users yet", perhaps). Lots of good thought went into that decision: your distro keeps its users basically on the strength of that type of decision.)
