gos locking up on "Starting up"

Hello, I'm running the latest build of gos but it's on an older system:
    mobo: MSI KT3 Ultra
CPU: AMD Athlon xp 1.0 ghz
    seagate 60 GB PATA HD
    TTS corp DVD burner
    NVidia GeForce FX5200 (AGP)

Gos was running well for about a year, until recently.
it started hanging up on the black screen that is labled "starting up"
and does not get to the startup splash screen.
i would power down the system and reboot and the problem was fixed.
However recently this did not work, the linux system will not boot and will not load the live CD.

I tried to load Mepis 8 and i just got a black screen.
Right now I'm downloading Mepis 7 hoping for better luck.

I've tested the Hard drive and the drive tests OK.
    I'm testing the memory now.

I wasn't sure where to post this as I'm not sure if this is ahardware issue or not.

    thank you!

From your description, this would prompt me to make a call about a hardware fault. If badblocks has passed then there is not a problem with your hard drive. If memtest (available on the Ubuntu live CD) gets up to test 6 then your memory is also fine.

I would investigate the motherboard and the power supply if I was in your situation. Motherboards do degrade over time as do power supplies. Whilst I would suspect a motherboard/peripheral failure, it is cheaper to get a new PSU and try that first - or borrow one off a friend.

    I hope this helps,

    James
