Know nothing - is this anonymizer a good idea?

    http://rosinstrument.com/cgi-proxy.htm

If you put a url in this thing it goes to the site. I am wondering if a site seems a bit dodgy I should use this facility, but have no idea about this sort of thing. Is it a good idea? Thanks any help.

I haven't seen this particular page before, but it sounds a lot like tor. If you install and activate tor, you are joining a network where you traffic is essentially anonymized (i.e. it is routed through other users the tor network in some 'unknown' fashion):

    www.torproject.org

If you are just looking for your traffic to be anonymous then I would stick with tor since it's more well known. Try hitting www.whatismyip.com and you'll see that every time your IP will change (and most likely it won't actually be your IP).

If you're trying to use a proxy because you need to access a particular site (blocked by whatever connection you are using) then I suppose this would suffice. Not really sure how anonymous it makes your browsing though.

Great thanks. I thought it was a lot faster than tor, but don't really know on reflection. Tor is very slow if there are graphics on the site??

On the off chance, is it safe to allow tor to use your own computer as a proxy? I take comfort in this computer allegedly being completely 'stealthy' and never responding to external probes as twer.
