How mount cd player
cd player doesn't play cds. Sys. doesn't see cd player, I think.
-
Tell us which os you are using.
Is this a new computer or is the cd player new or has just been installed?
You will not see the cd players on most of the distros without media in them.
Install a cd that you know has data on it and when you install it listen and make sure the cd player starts. (you should be able to hear it spin.

How mount cd player
uby 8.04 running old kernel 19 something, I think - so dialup modem will work.
8.04 is broken and can't use apt, etc.
Stuck drive in P4 computer, works (Bought computer for little money from someone who bought faster.)
Cd drive was in 'new' computer. Have kubunt10.04 Lts Desktop cd.
I put cd in drive, drive door closes and light comes on on front of drive.
Nothing on screen.
What do i put in terminal to go further?
Thank you!

How mount cd player
Found this on web & tried:
sudo mount /media/cdrom0/ -o unhide
yielded mount : no medium found.
I can't understand uby documentation re. mount - seems to be no pattern for naming cd drives that I can identify - duh, or something. I've seen sdc, hdc ... .
-
sudo eject /dev/hdc
yielded can't find or open.

My earlier answer to this never appeared, so trying again:
uby 8.04 running old kernel - 19 something I think - broken OS, apt won't get : ]
Took my Drive and put it in a 2 gig p4 - thats faster to me - box w/this cd player/rewriter.
Wanted to install Kubuntu 10.04 LTS Desktop from a cd sent for.
CD inserts, llight comes on player, nothing on screen.

It means the cd drive is not found or no cd found in drive..
Try the command as root: ls /dev and post the results

Sorry I missed your question, the device listing to mount cd is
/dev/cdrom or /dev/sr0
Your cdrom should be mounted automatically when a cd is inserted. You can double check your distro by manually mounting the cdrom with a cd in it.

Ummm, looks like its showing stuff (players) that aren't there. How do i get rid of all but what's actually on the ide ribbons now? ''' Maybe that would help??

List contents of your /etc/fstab the command would be sudo less /etc/fstab there should be a line near the bottom that looks something like this
Code:
/dev/scd0 /media/cdrom0 udf,iso9660 user,noauto 0 0
The first part ie. /dev/scd0 is the device, (on my system) the second is the mount point
On a older kernel your devices may be listed as hda, hdb, hdc, or hdd
If you are not running sata or scsi what channel ie. Primary IDE or Secondary IDE on your motherboard is your cd-rom and do you know if your cd-rom is running as Master or Slave?
example: If your jumper on your cd-rom is set to SL and is plugged into your Primary IDE then linux will see it or list it as /dev/hdb.
Once you know how linux see's your cd-rom then you can manually mount it. Lets say your linux see's your cd-rom as /dev/hdb the first thing you need to do is pick or make a mount point.
sudo mkdir /mnt/mountpoint
next mount the dev.
sudo mount /dev/hdb /mnt/mountpoint
now you should be able to cd (change directory) to that directory and view the contents of the cd or use a file manager on the gui side to view contents.
note: to unmount the drive when your done make sure you are not in the directory then give the command
sudo umount /dev/hdb /mnt/mountpoint
Let us know if this works.
Wanted to install Kubuntu 10.04 LTS Desktop from a cd sent for.
CD inserts, llight comes on player, nothing on screen.
Can't find CD player in 'Places' or file sys.- and I don't know what I'm doing...
Are you trying to install 10.04 with Ubuntu 8 running?

How cd player
Thank you very much for your reply, I think I'll be able to do something with that (in other words I think I understand parts...).
If get it going would like to boot into 10.04 cd & install it w/8.04 off.
Of course, i don't know how to install to my home thingy but I'm hoping to make some sense out of it as I go along... .
CD drive is cable select master on secondary IDE.
Will attempt your above when I can get back.
Mon, Tues., maybe Wed., I hope.
Discretionary time gone until then, or maybe beyond. : [ Thanks again!
After answering this again next week should I start a fresh thread if I have any additional questions so I don't get buried?

Phantom Cd Machine
Thanks 4 your reply -
... sudo less /etc/fstab[/B] there should be a line near the bottom that looks something like this
Code:
/dev/scd0 /media/cdrom0 udf,iso9660 user,noauto 0 0
THIS is what mine says:
/dev/scd0 /media/cdrom0 udf,iso9660 user,noauto,exec,utf8 0 0
The first part ie. /dev/scd0 is the device, (on my system) the second is the mount point
example: If your jumper on your cd-rom is set to SL and is plugged into your Primary IDE then linux will see it or list it as /dev/hdb.
SO: Secondary ide master should b /dev/hdc ???
And given scd0, that doesn't make sense to me - secondary ide master is the first (0) cd drive? Is that how to read scd0?
Once you know how linux see's your cd-rom - oops - then you can manually mount it. Lets say your linux see's your cd-rom as /dev/hdb the first thing you need to do is pick or make a mount point.
SO: The mount point above 'media/cdrom0' is no good?
sudo mkdir /mnt/mountpoint
next mount the dev.
sudo mount /dev/hdb /mnt/mountpoint
sudo mount /dev/scd0 /mnt/mountpoint ?
terminal goes to next line w/cursor at first space... I waited -
then put in password again, hit enter, ... and waited...
Tried sudo mount /dev/scd0 /mnt/mountpoint in another terminal - same thing. Ah, eventually said: jk@jk-desktop:~$ mount: No medium found
Um, fstab lists old cd player that is not there now? Or what???
Gee, and I thought you had me all figured out and I was going to live happily ever after... : )

Your cd is probably not listed as /dev/hdb.
You need to run command
sudo less /etc/fstab and post the results
You should be able to mount your cd
sudo mount /dev/cdrom /mnt/mountpoint

/dev/fd0 /media/floppy0 auto rw,user,noauto,exec,utf8 0 0

/dev/scd0 line waa posted above. According to an above previous post media/cdrom is a mount point. I can't get a handle on this -partly- because I can't make sense out of it. Can't remember nonsense. Please spell it out for me.
