Unable to Install Linux Stuck on Random White Screen
Hi Guys,
I'm trying to install Linux Mint on an older Windows 7 PC. I have tried both Cinnamon and Xfce versions, but each time I end up with a blank white screen and a black cursor in the middle. Is this normal, and how can I fix it? Any suggestions?

That's probably an unscrupulous engineered windows block that won't let it install Linux over windows.. I have that same problem with all windows-7 used hard drives..
Solution is to get 'DBAN HD Eraser'. Reboot with the DBAN CD in the slot.. Key in autonuke, Tap enter..
*Do not have any external media in the USB slots.. DBAN will erase them first, fast, and hard when it starts its data killer run..
Been there, done that, Very Not fun!..
Let DBAN format the hard drive for about 5-minutes, then eject the CD, then hard shut down by pressing and holding the On button.. Now try the Linux install without a net-connection..
Another method to format the hard drive.. Remove the USB connector assembly from a wrecked external hard drive.. Attach it to the hard drive and to a USB slot of a working computer, and format the attached hard drive.. Then try the install.. An expert computer genius told me he formats an old hard drive 3-times to know it's absolutely clean...
These days it's crucial that you double encrypt the new install to prevent criminal hackers from getting into the OS and at your files.. Encrypt the install, and encrypt file folder..
Do not install net-connected till you have done these following processes that can be done without a net-connection.. Reboot after doing major things.. Run Bleachbit a lot..
I ran Mint XFC and Mint Cinnamon for a few months.. I didn't like them.. XFC is silly.. Cinnamon slowed down a lot and seriously glitched-up when photo editing and pix sorting.. Cinnamon is a Pain to use, good for toast and pastry but not for computers...
Boycott and forget the newer versions of Mint, they are corrupt.. Get 'Linux Mint Mate 20' from an old source.. Double encrypt the install, and block updates.. Find 'encrypt the OS' intentionally hidden n the first little options box in install.. Get Bleachbit from the creators of Bleach bit, not from canonical..
Use only: <bleachbit_4.4.2-0_all_ubuntu1804> in MInt Mate 20..
Install Bleach bit from a flash drive.. Do not let Bleach bit update..
Get Librewolf and Portmaster..
Do not click-on Firefox.. Kill it with synaptic..
Do not add multimedia codecs..
Never click on update manager.. Block it in start up programs..
Do not click on welcome screen.. Block and boycott it..
With synaptic dump: firefox, ufw, rsync, bluetooith, transmission, hexchat..
Change sources to a trusted university..
Now you've got a smooth running, quiet, reasonably safe and secure OS..
Never click on emails from: firefox, canonical, mozilla, microsoft..
Never open an email from someone you don't know and trust..
Never click on pop-up links..
Disconnect when you aren't using the Web..
Save as many old hard drives as you can, and load them with Mint Mate 20..
Never have an external media in the USB slot when the OS is Net-connected..
Do not register in microsoft's Mint forums..
Do not open emails from microsoft's Mint forums..

Caution saving google images..
The Internet is now infested with: nazi's, religion's inquisition, criminals, charlatans, and organized crime.. Now days the websites are the viruses.. If you save pix from google images never click on pix by 'neural'.. Their self-righteous evil crap will kill your OS and backups...
Before you save google images surf their creators to see if anyone is complaining about them, exposing their crimes..
Before installing anything off the Web, surf it's title, adding different words to it.. like 'X is spyware'..
X is a virus..
X is a trojan..
X damages operating systems..
X can't be uninstalled..
X doesn't work..
X can't be trusted..
I boycott those 'we use cookies' links.. I see that, and I go elsewhere searching for websites that are honest and trustworthy that don't install malware into visitor's computers.. I do not trust: microsoft, opera browser, mailfence, gmail, yahoo, microsoft's mint forums, microsoft's Linux help forums, firefox browser, canonical, mozilla, chrome browser, brave browser, everything chinese and russian.. I boycott them all...
If I have some important heads-up information for a political or business entity, and I can't send it to them without needing to click on their 'we use cookies' link, I let it pass, and forget trying to advise or help them.. I write them off...
If you want to know the truth about something surf it in Reddit..

Thank you for quite and detailed approach! Thanks for sharing all the tips. I will definitely look into DBAN for clearing out old drives and giving Linux another go Also, I see your point on encrypting the system and being cautious about updates.

If you try Linux again..
If you try Linux again, I suggest you try 'Linux Mint 20 Mate' first..
Do so install it without a net-connection..
After everything is done as I've detailed, change sources to a trusted university, net-connect.. Reboot.. Then install Librewolf.. Reboot.. Set net-connection to manual by in settings general unchecking 'connect automatically'.. Configure Librewolf without a net-connection.. Block updates.. Then install Portmaster.. Reboot.. Don't mess with Portmaster's settings.. Run Bleachbit.. Then install your preferred Firefox addons for Librewolf... Now you can play on the Web reasonably safe and secure.. This OS is super for artists, archives, and creative writing... 'Linux Mint 20 Mate' is a smooth, quick, clean, quiet, uncluttered, full featured home computer operating system that doesn't fight, nor insult, nor clutter the user with silly junk, built by honorable, honest, caring people.. The install ISO doesn't need the updates.. It runs good, clean, and secure the way it is 'out of the box'.. Adding those 540 available unscroupulous updates these days is like adding viruses and trojans.. If you experience any little problems just reboot, then run Bleachbit.. Problems all gone... I run Bleachbit after or before each session...
It's a good plan to never post unrelated links, especially not in a computer forum.. That's generally viewed by forums as sneaky spamming, scamming, low-end parasitic marketing, and probable criminal hacking by corporate criminals and their enforcer stooges...
What made you dislike Linux the first time you tried it..? Which one did you try..?
The nice things about Linux is it's mostly honest, it's free, and the best hackers have a difficult time trying to hack it.. The india phone scammer criminals can't even touch a Linux OS.. You tell them your computer is running Linux, they instantly disconnect...
I refresh the net-book's OS every month to clear out any clutter and doodoo it might have caught from the Net's latrine-class money-sucking criminals.. A new install takes only an hour and a bit fully customized.. I never have anything of value for the criminals in the net-book's OS, only 300-gigabytes of uploaded encrypted back-up copies of my favorite videos, music, notes, and pix... The g'rilas can't touch it... If the OS glitches even the slightest, in goes the install ISO DVD to reinstall the OS...
Boycott the nasty stinky plugged cyber-latrine: grrmail, microshift, yahwho, updates, pop-up links, questionable emails, and everything china.. Get a Protonmail email account.. They are super secure, encrypted, honest, upstanding, and respectable, they don't request any of your personal information, and they don't read your emails...
Question: Are you in any way associated with microsoft..?
