should i use SSDs instead of HDDs inside the NAS - what do i need to consider here!?

Hello and good morning dear community

hope youre all right - and everything goes okay at your site!!

First of all: I hope I'm in the right sub-forum here.

My question - it's about a NAS - does it still make sense to equip it with an HDD? What do you think!?
note: well - Network-attached storage (NAS) are quite flexible: they of course can interface with hard disk drives (HDDs) and solid-state drives (SSDs) either.

Meanwhile - SSDs are pretty cheap. In my opinion, the prices are all pretty good. And maybe you can get a bargain before Christmas.
What do you think!? The SSD, in my opinion, does have some advantages. Would you go for the SSD here too!?

as said above: SSDs they are considerably more expensive than mechanical drives - the HDD.
When looking at new drives for the existing NAS, what should i consider (if using SSDs or the old HDD)

I'm looking forward to hear from you
    regards

Mechanical is slow, and wears-out.. Solid state is fast, and reliable to a point...
What is the life-expectancy of solid state..? I don't know.. They haven't worn-out yet.. That makes them worth the price...

Do any unscrupulous hard drive manufacturers include engineered timed obsoletion in the transistors in solid state like some hell-demons do with tv's, phones, and various consumer electronics, to force sales like how half the car manufacturers add engineered rust spots..? I'm finding a lot of engineered early rust-out spots in GM products, as if they don't get enough money from us they've got to intentionally make them fall apart on us early to make us buy more new crap... Dishonesty and evil runs our world.. Money in the filthy paws of mindless soulless turd-brains has turned on us, and is now spending us.. Humanity can't handle money with any love, honor, or respect.. Money is inherently greed and evil.. The anunnaki space dinosaurs who invaded and conquered earth and our species 155,000 years ago gave us their insane money concept.. We've found caches of their 100,000 year old gold coins in sunken ancient alien cities...

Probably the best course is to collect hard drives from all used electronics sources.. You get what you get.. Right now the computer is going obsolete quickly.. People are tossing them out.. Determine where they are being trashed, and devise secret wise methods and deals that get you as many as you can before the flow has subsided, is how I acquired these 100 notebooks, 150 notebook hard drives, 100 tower hard drives, pounds of Ram, 150 phones and pads, 200 cameras, and such.. My best sources were computer repair shops junk, and electronics recyclers, till it all almost dried-up... Now I have enough spare parts... Collecting junk, and Barter, is the best way to go in this high priced crazy world run by moralless unscrupulous greedy pig entitled elitist g'rillas... I offered computer shops free used parts when they request them, if they give me their junk electronics for free... They drop boxes full of their electronics junk on my back porch nearly every second weekend in the middle of the night.. It's old stuff, but most of it still works... They leave notes and lists of parts they need.. I fill their orders if I have what they need, and leave it in baggies on the porch... The stuff that is useless to me goes to my relative's precious metals recycling hobby... He pays me 30% of his cash-in precious metals net.. Barter is Win, Win, Win, Win.. Barter gives, and keeps on giving.. Money takes, and keeps on taking... I haven't paid out one penny for all this free electronics stuff...

It's 2:AM.. I'm at the net notebook keying this note.. I just felt a sudden pointy sting on my head.. A remote-viewer vampire has just attached to feed and/or to steal science, or to steal a ride to heaven.. I grab it with my powerful spirit hand, push it out of my head, take it to inner earth's hell wall. slam it hard against the rock wall, slam several four foot hardwood stakes through it deep into the wall, then inject its head with a powerful venom and liquid fire.. The sting vanished instantly... An excited grotesque lizard then comes rushing across its wall to feed upon my latest offering.. Seems it enjoys cooked vampire.. Then I attack the demon-beast at its source by slamming a cosmic dagger through its skull into its head multiple times, and twisting the blade.. I am Not a cannibal's meal!.. I do so enjoy slaughtering vampires... I wish there was an electronic vampire repellent...

good evening dear Demanding Truth - thank you so much for the reply.

glad to hear from you again!!

When deciding whether to use HDDs or SSDs in a NAS, it really comes down to my specific needs and budget.

well dear Demanding Truth -i am very glad to hear from ohters and i am so glad to be part of this great forum

here are some considerations from me:

Capacity and Cost: i think that HDDs offer significantly higher storage capacities at a lower cost per terabyte.
but yes - i am currently not planning to store large amounts of data (e.g., media libraries or backups), HDDs may be more practical.

the Performance: guess that SSDs a bit faster and can improve file transfer speeds and reduce latency, which is beneficial for applications requiring high responsiveness.

and regarding the Durability and Lifespan: HDDs have moving parts, making them more susceptible to physical wear and tear. on the flip side - i think that SSDs, while more robust in this regard, have a limited number of write cycles.
Demanding truth, what do you think !?

most important: - my Use Case: For my use case home NAS setups focused on media streaming or backups,
but Demanding Truth - i think that HDDs are usually sufficient.

Demanding Truth - i look forward to hear form you

    have a great weekend.
    regards

'Budget' is the pits... but there's ways around it...

I don't know anything about 'write cycles'..
I know some way off the wall obscure stuff about metal things though.. It's worth exploring.. An old history prof gave me his deceased wife's old car, a 1945 oldsmobile rocket in mint condition.. He had me swear on a bible I would treat it like a lady, because he claimed his wife put something of her in the car, her favorite possession.. That day I triple waxed and polished it.. I sat in it with a candle and tweezers picking all the lint off the plush blue velvet interior.. Next morn I finished cleaning it.. I stood in front of it, and walked up to it, and kissed it on the left fender.. To my surprise and shock the metal formed lips kissing me back.. I was so shocked I fell on me butt on the gravel.. Next day as I sat in it, arms came out of the seat, and gave me a tight hug... Point is: Respect metal.. Respect your hard drives.. Add something of you into them, and they'll treat you right... Seems everything is alive, even metal, and rock, and wind, a grain of sand... The only things not fully alive are humans... Humans are devolving into nothing.. But you are alive.. You are a nephilim angel inside your majesty.. You are a nephilim, one of us.. We treat all life with love, honor, and respect.. Try to teach that to humans, they'll try to kill us.. Humans fear love and life.. They hate what they fear.. They can't handle the truth.. They believe their spirits come alive after their bodies die.. Essentially they are living death itself.. I live my life With my spirit like you do.. We are nephilim aliens... We own this universe, its thousand deserted developed nephilim planets, the four nephilim heavens, and this planet...

There are 'Computer Libraries in some cities.. They recycle electronics, and donate used retired computers to the public who needs them, like the food bank gives out free food... That's probably a good source for free and cheap hard drives... I hope there's a computer library in your town.. Offer to help them fix notebooks one day a week, and in no time you'll be acquiring free hard drives and things from them...

Surf YouTube for music related to: kundilini, reiki, meditation, mind relaxing, sleep music, zen, zen meditation, soaking.. Listen to 'Tangerine Dream' first two albums at least once (if you can handle it's antiquity and their infantile mind games)..

Hold your hard drive to your chest like it's your newborn, and add some of your spirit to it.. You'll get better service from it.. Tell it from your spirit: "I need you to run fast and smooth forever so I will have more time to love you more".. Everything wants love, even metal... I use that message to the sky spirits to control the weather...

NAS is an internet thing.. Anything on the internet is not private.. People are stealing, reading, and copying it.. I think NAS is a scam.. WhooH! 400-bucks for you to be permitted to store your data in hell's archives.. Why not use external hard drives for free..? Why not acquire a second notebook, and keep your private data in it.. Pull the net card to make it safe and secure.. You can't trust the internet now that organized crime has taken control of it.. Don't give the slimy criminals any of your financial data.. They are at war with the world to appease their god-class greed and out of control ego.. One day it'll happen that the hoodlums have suddenly drained a billion bank accounts, and have capped a billion credit cards... Why do people give the internet access to their private data in 'hell on earth'..? This is hell.. We're already in it.. Look around you.. Look at the news, religions wars, the mass insanity, the crime, the evil, the mass-murdering, the cannibal eateries, hellifornia, the active destruction of the planet, the child sex trade, the planet falling apart, morons destroying our precious Linux.. That's 'hell'.. Doesn't make sense to store your data where hell has easy access to it..
Look what happened to a bunch of female entertainers who kept their private data in her phones, computers, and in internet email accounts.. Google surf: 'Scarlett Johansson hacker lawsuit'.. A little mindless soulless loveless hell demon turd got at their private data, and published it, and their private nudie pix which they had made exclusively for their husbands delight.. That evil little turd tried to destroy their lives for fun and sport.. That's how hell's devils have fun, 'destroying life and lives'.. He got only 10-years in prison for it.. He should have got 20-years or life...

NAS is BS and Dangerous... You are your own security and privacy... You can't trust the internet these days.. It's an organized crime war, growing worse by the minute...

Look at 'mailtrench' free email accounts.. They claim to be a secure and private university students email account.. I tried their email accounts.. Suddenly I was getting emails from them informing me that my accounts were terminated and I was banned for emailing data their system doesn't permit.. They read their sucker victim clients emails.. I bet the NAS system does too.. 'Mailtrench' reads university students private mails and students proprietary research data, probably to steal new science data.. That's organized crime.. I warned universities about 'mailtrench's' unscrupulous free email accounts...

A NAS i.e. network attached storage does not necessarily mean internet. I use it for local backups. My preference would be a regular HDD specific for enterprise or NAS usage over desktop. A SSD under typical desktop usage has a similar life span as a regular HDD but I don't know about NAS usage. Is this a commercial NAS device i.e. synology or home built computer NAS?

Your speed limitation is your network which typically now days is 1GB versus SATA.

Doesn't 'Network' and 'LAN' mean it is 'data transfer via the internet'..?
If your data gets on the internet, probably someone somewhere is stealing it/seeing it...
I posted something to a private email 20-hours ago, and five hours later an unrelated uninvited not permitted snoopy news item and youtube video came out referring to my data...

WW3 is here right now.. It's a bit active in every nation, in some more than in others... I think it's time for the meek and innocent to get off the internet, except for learning and studying what's happening and changing in the world day to day, as everything falls into disarray like it's all 'slipping into a hell'...

I took an old notebook, installed a Linux OS, set it up for the internet, have nothing in it but a couple background pix, and use it exclusively to surf the web for youtube music and new war stuff.. The rest I don't care about.. I don't buy on the internet.. I don't trust the internet in the slightest... I bought only one thing on the net, a chinese item.. It came with the wrong power supply...
I heard about a poor old lady who bought a wheelchair on the net.. It came as a lawn-chair with wheels on it...
People don't get it yet.. The internet was originally created as a war communications tool...

I'm finishing-up installing operating systems in all my many extra hard drives, right now before the internet has gone offline collapsed because of the war, and before microsoft is corrupting and blocking canonical, and what ever else it has its demon-claws into... It seems as if microsoft is killing the Internet and Linux like poopin is killing Ukraine... I wonder what made them all hate humanity so much..? Were they weaned to early..? Are they still pissed over diaper-rash..? Did they get run over by choochoo trains..? Did rabid doggies bite them..?

You can't trust the internet.. It's an organized crime war- zone right now, full of greed, hate, crime, and evil.. Get what you need from it, and dump the internet cesspool till the war is over.. Don't get stung by the evil that's growing and festering on the web today...
Have you noticed that the world's crap media, evil bullying entertainers, and evil politicians are all beginning to collapse and crumble from the weight of their own collective evils... The devils and demons are getting their nasty karma's right back at them, right back in their faces upon their lives, and it's destroying them.. Their doodoo has orbited right back at them and is hitting their fans big time... Look what just happened to 'the view' and 'goldburg'.. Their crimes finally came right back at them.. Disney and the networks fired and trashed them like flushing a great plugged toilet.. The bullies, liars, and slanderers are all collapsing, it's happening right now.. Their war and evil is coming right back at them...

Get off the internet.. Let it crumble and collapse without hurting you, without it taking your devices with it, unless you want to play in their insane war, and don't care if your machine gets destroyed... I wager that soon WW3 will be attacking the internet with all kinds of phone and computer destroying bugs and unavoidable malware programs...
Boycott comments and chats.. Gossiping and blabbering does nothing for you.. Install the 'hide comments and chat' browser addons...

Download 50-Linux OS's.. Buy a box of DVD's.. Explore Linux...
Put an ad in a newspaper or in a sellers blog like amazon: "Wanted retired notebooks and computer junk cheap."..
Don't trust the internet while it's a war zone.. Don't store anything you value on the internet in clouds and foofs.. You are your own security.. Keep your precious treasured files in computers that aren't connected to the crazy war-net..

Nope. The internet would be outside your house. You could have hundreds of computers inside your house and transfer data all day long without internet access.

Oh..? Silly me.. I'm a bit dumb when it comes to cumputering...

Just guessing: So would the transferring be shared unit to unit remotely or via bluetooth features..? or would the network need be connected by wires..?
If the router were unplugged would the private network still function..?

    _____________________________

Out of curiosity I google surfed LAN..
I found this message: "How do LANs work? Most LANs connect to the Internet at a central point: a router. Home LANs often use a single router, while LANs in larger spaces may additionally use network switches for more efficient packet delivery. LANs almost always use Ethernet, WiFi, or both in order to connect devices within the network."

So it seems that a LAN does transfer your private data via the internet, which means that your data is vulnerable and exposed on the internet, which means that unscrupulous hacker forces could easily track and see the content of your private data transfers, which means LAN probably isn't safe and secure...

I stumbled upon this: "How secure is a LAN network? Because LANs are interconnected networks, they can be vulnerable to various security threats. Some common security risks associated with LANs include: Unauthorized Access: If an unauthorized user gains physical or network access to the LAN, they may be able to view, modify, or steal data."

I google surfed 'Can LAN be hacked?'..
YIKES! There's a lot of nasty stuff about LAN.. Best to avoid LAN in 2024 if you want your data to remain private.. LAN definitely isn't secure, so I'll stick to transferring via flash drives computer to computer instead.. No LAN for me...

I just google surfed: "Exploit holes in Linux".. WOW! There's some real bad stuff out there we don't know much about.. is why I need be so cautious about dumping: Firefox, Rsync, Bluetooth, Hexchat, and UFW, in favor of immediately installing: Bleachbit, Portmaster, and Librewolf, and about boycotting updates and newer distro versions... Like I said: 'The internet is now infested with unscrupulous organized crime, greed, religion, and war, and elitist lunatics are desperately trying to kill our Linux treasure.. is why I deleted 99% of my internet content, and don't use the Web as a social tool anymore.. It's foolish to trust the internet these days as it grows more criminal by the minute.. I stress that people should have their private data stored in a computer that doesn't ever connect to the internet, and a second computer that is used exclusively for playing on the Web so the internet can't ever touch your valued private data... One tiny mistake can let a hack in that can permanently lock-up or delete your data permanently.. You could lose everything in a minute.. Be safe: get a second computer for data storage...
I experienced this terrible curse a month ago.. Something nasty in a downloaded google pix destroyed three external hard drives and two computers hard drives.. I'm lucky I had 50-extra backup hard drives with everything in them... I lost only five downloaded pix and ten notes, but if everything had been on just that one hard drive I would have lost all my 30-years of files.. How would you feel if you suddenly lost all your decades of files, your: pix, music, videos, notes, to one silly little mistake in trusting something you shouldn't have from the internet..?
Boycott the internet connected LAN and NAS, and the blahblah gagagoogoo gossip blogs.. They do nothing for you but waste your time... The internet is a war communications tool, and the world is so into the early stages of the overly prophesied WW3.. Get a new hobby while the barbarian apes are killing, shooting, cooking, and bombing each other.. It's all gonna get worse than what you're seeing on duh teevee.. Do your 'rural prayer meetings' at home till the wars are over...
