Lightbulb Which file system to choose...in Linux?

    Good day dear friends,

If it comes the process of choosing a file-system I am a bit insecure. As a Linux user for years now I allways stick to the ext4 system. In earlier time I used ext3 then ext4.

Well. - which file system do you use, and why?

As said above: I have always used the ext4 system whenever I've used Linux. Lately, I have thought - that this is probably due to the lack of deeper understanding of the other options - and then I considered the use of other file systems: BTRFS seems like the stand out choice, at least to me.

Can you please share your thoughts and experiences.

There are almost a dozen of different systems there and for me it is that difficult to choose.

thank you so much .. .I will have a closer look at Reddit. But well they have sooo many sub-reddits.

BTW; what about the new file system - the "Bcachefs" - i guess this is a pretty new FS - and i should stick with the other ones..

    Short Version:
    Try different FS's..

    Long Version:
You should try every file system for a couple weeks each to get an insider feel for what they do and don't do.. Like how I tried all the Linux OS's, then finally settled on Linux Mint Mate 20, and changed all my notebooks on the three desks to it...

I do a lot of notes, inventing, activism, photo editing, music editing, and some video editing... I found cinnamon fs to be irritating and almost useless.. It slowed down and locked-up the OS after a few minutes of sorting pix into files.. Cinnamon is only good on pastries and in candies, special coffee's and hot chocolate, but not in Linux OS's.. They should rename the cinnamon file system to 'spicy doggie-poop'...

Mate knows about Linux file systems.. Start a friendly dialogue with the Mate people.. Ask them if they have anything new they need the public to test out.. Treat them like I treat wild animals.. I could say to a wild cougar in the forest after bowing to it: "Greetings your majesty, I have a gift for you, you are safe to approach.. I would pour a small carton of creme into a bowl before the monster, and maybe feed it a tin of sardines.. In about twenty minutes I would be brushing its fur and arms with a nice brush.. In an hour I could be brushing its chin and tummy.. In five hours I could have it resting its head on my legs, purring, fast asleep.. Life doesn't fear me, and I don't fear life.. We are one.. Only humans who fear truth fear me.. Humans are mostly Not life...

Your only logical option for FS's is to try them all.. You'll need to acquire at least ten spare hard drives from recyclers, or from citizens who are tossing out their notebooks.. You do so need a CD of DBAN, and a notebook cooler pad under the notebook.. Computers don't like heat.. If you are doing a lot of uninstalling, installing, and uploading give the computer times to cool down before doing next process and phases.. Give your backups hardware time to cool down by transferring small bunches of files at a time, and letting things cool-down between transfers.. Use a few silent fans on your machines.. Your machines will last a lot longer...
Best option for computer internet safety and security I found is to have an old thht notebook running the newest ubuntu, in front of your net-book.. Have the 'bait the kookoo's' computer set with the new firefox up in four active tabs: google, youtube, msn, a disposable email accounts compose, updater, weather channel, and a religious website.. Let the insane monkeys do their leaky diaper precious poopies and gagagoogoo messes in the garbage bait firewall computer..

I'm driving a 1999 GMC pickup truck.. It's still good on gas.. My neighbor destroys a new SUV every four years driving the shid out of them... I don't like being even within a hundred feet of him.. He radiates insanity and raw evil.. He's probably an alien anunnaki t.rex inside.. If the food ran out in the cities because of war and volcanoes he would probably be killing and eating the whole neighborhood, starting with our pets, then our kids and the widows.. The cops, politicians, and military sure would.. Politicians would be getting their people meat deliveries processed into meal size freezer baggies... They wouldn't run out of meat till the cities ran out of people.. The zombie cities will be drone hunting forest people for their meat and breeding stock.. The wars will never end till there aren't enough participants to make wars.. Humanity is now the proverbial 'serpent eating its own tail'.. The cities will devolve to be like the movie 'Mad Max'.. I saw it, so did the author of that flic.. I see the future like Mr. Nostradamus did.. Humanity's future is ugly as hell...
I was humanity's future.. The vatican homosexual cannibal terrorist cult tried 78-times to assassinate me in defending their insane religious terrorist cult from scientists exposing their alien anunnaki lies and crimes.. Humanity lost its future being barbarian apes.. Now they have hell to pay and embrace.. Silly humans...

You could acquire a scrapper notebook and scrapper external hard drive back-up, and run it full throttle hard and nasty without caring about its overheating.. When you've killed it, just get another one... When I've killed a utility notebook, into the box of scrap electronics it goes for the recycler, and I reach to the top of the stack of notebooks, peal one off the top, wash it, install the old hard drive, press the on button, and I'm up'n going again in a couple minutes, or I might just grab one of these 12 notebooks I acquired the last two weeks, and try one of those...

I met a young fellow at a garage sale who likes to play with notebooks like I do.. When my body has expired, my brother will fill his pickup truck box brimming over the top with all my computer stuff, and will deliver it all to him for free... That guy is gonna have uh huge pardy with all my electronics junk.. Then that guy saves and gives my brother all of his scrap electronics free for his precious metals recycling hobby.. That's how you do it when you live in the 'Family of Mankind', the 'Brotherhood of Humanity'.. That's how Barter works.. Money takes, and keeps on taking.. Barter gives, and keeps on giving... Money is a curse.. Money is now spending us.. Money in the filthy paws of mindless soulless loveless hell-bound wild cristian nazi elitist pigs is why humanity is devolving, suiciding, going extinct.. In nine years this species is 100% extinct, as in Poof! Gone!.. Better pick your FS before then...

While mate and cinnamon are different desktops the underlying default filesystem is ext4. Mate is a lighter desktop then cinnamon which is probably why it runs better since I assume you are using older hardware.

There are some distributions that have switched to using btrfs as default but I tend to stick to tried and true ext4. As suggested try it put but that means reinstalling.

hello you dear - many thanks for the reply

i am really gladto hear from you ...

dear Demanding truth - I really repally appreciate your enthusiasm. It is really great and i like your great engagement:
BTW: Have you personally tested BTRFS, XFS, or ZFS? If so, what were your experiences?

dear Michaelk, many thanks also to you for your answer. That makes sense. I guess the performance difference might be more about the desktop environment than the filesystem. Have you ever tried BTRFS or another alternative? If so, what made you stick with ext4?

I am glad for both answers - and as ever: i really thank you for encouraging me - so many times so far! Thats great. Thats exacly what i need!

On a sidenote: You both: Hats off to you your work here - and what really inspires me!! 😳♥♥♥ - its amazing! 🚀I wanna truly thank you for making this for us all. 🙏🙏🙏😊👍🏻 That said- i am very sure that lots of other will benefit here - in this thread
and of course in the whole form too. Keep up all the work!!!😊👍🏻 ✨🌱
