well i have a very practical topic ? backing up my data efficiently using rsync to a USB stick - but afik it seems o be both simple and tricky, depending on the specifics.


i need a clean, reliable solution


my Goal: .... can be described like so:

• Back up a directory tree from /home to a USB stick (e.g. /media/usb-id)
• Keep the same directory structure
• Only copy files that are new or changed
• Preserve timestamps (and maybe ownership/permissions if important)
• Avoid unnecessary re-copying

hmm - whats here the simplest, safest and smartest way


would you recommend me to start with a lets say 'dry run' like so:

sudo rsync -Havn source/ target

.... and if this goes all right and the results will look good, i could remove the option n and do it practically ...,like so:

sudo rsync -Hav source/ target

what do you recommend.

Yes, rsync can backup your home directory. Make sure the USB drive is formatted with a linux filesystem.

Maybe people should be cautious about using Rsync.. Back about 23-years ago I read that Rsync was created by the NSA to spy on peoples computer data by have Rsync send NSA copies of their files.. is why on new installs immediately after first boot I run Synaptic to completely uninstall Rsync, Transmission, Hexchat, Bluetooth, Firefox, and UFW... then add Bleachbit, Portmaster, and Librewolf...

rsync has been patched. Make sure you have updated your system but if you are not running a rsync server then you should have a problem. rsync was written to be an improvement to the BSD rdiff utility. rsync was not written by the NSA.

Makes more sense to store one's valued data by physically uploading it to a bunch of external hard drives.. It's too easy: You acquire spare hard drives from flea markets, scrap yards, garage sales, places like hospitals and schools getting rid of their computers.. I might have just found/exposed the source of ongoing computer problems for some or many people, when your computer seems to be forever getting corrupted way too often as if it seems you are a nasty hacker's target and victim...

Maybe you are using one or more of those infamous malware corrupt chinese flash drives..? Every time you plug it into the computer's USB it infects your computer's OS with chinese espionage malware...

Probably what's needed is to make a scrap computer with a fresh new Linux install fully updated, without any encryption nor peripherals.. Acquire a software that logs everything happening in the OS in real time.. Plug in a USB flash drive, net-connect, and leave it on and running all day and night.. Copy and Check-out the logs the next day in a different computer or hard drive.. Locate, find, determine, identify the virus/trojan/malware pest that's damaging your computer.. It's probably a corrupt flash drive...

I'm gonna take a spare newly installed low capacity unused notebook hard drive, connect to the internet, add a note, a pix, an mp3 tune, and an mp4 video file to the desktop, then add them to all the flash drives one at a time, and leave the bunch of flash drives USB connected with five USB hubs, and leave the notebook on and net-connected for 24-hours to see what kind of a mess happens in the computer...

Maybe a modern firewall should see everything that's happening in the OS, hold it in quarantine stasis, assess it by letting malware try to attack a fake OS empty shell, then let in only the clean data... The shell being like a 'mouse-trap' that seizes and holds the pest malware entity in quarantine and frozen stasis, to send it in a sealed package to the firewall's provider for assessment..
