AFAIK something like 2.5.39 or 2.5.43 should work well enough, but then, just because it worked (aka booted) for me doesn't mean it's ready for production...

Then again, the nVidia drivers WILL NOT work with kernel 2.5 without some unsupported patches, so you're cutting out a decently-large chunk of users right there (myself for one).

I'd say waiting for 2.6 might be a better idea. Initial releases might have a couple of issues, but for some reason I think it'll be better than 2.5.

    Good point. Alright then.

lets stick with 2.4.*. Will go for the latest, which is 2.4.20 at the time of writing this.

I could help with the coding if you need me to. I'm a pretty good C programmer, a little short on experience, but I learn quickly. I've never done anything serious, never helped with any open-source projects either, so I'll be a little slow at first. But this sounds pretty cool, and I'd like to help.

Trememndous. That gives us... three so far? and plenty willing to learn, from what I've read. Including myself. And that's just on justlinux.

I can do some C programming if you really need me to...

Be warned though, I only know the basics and am not very fast with it...

But I am a quick learner and am in the process of teaching myself...

Also I am going to ITT Tech for programming in September, which could provide me with a lot of resources. But it's not until september.

In the meantime I may be able to scrounge up a box, or at least and extra hard drive and my existing box, to install it on. It wont be the greatest though, and the hard drive wont be over a few gigs at the most. I do have a lot of space on my current HD if I can get it to Dual...I mean Triple boot.

Just let me know what you need...

    My System:
    ASUS A7N8X
    AMD Athlon XP 2100+
    256MB OCZ PC3200
GeForce 4 MX 440 (I want an FX!!)
Sound Blaster 128 (onboard sound blows)
    80GB Western Digital
    Toshiba 12A DVD-ROM
    Memorex 52X24X52 CD-RW

    OSes: SuSe Linux 8.1 Pro/windows 98se

An Operating System with a Linux kernel. It will be full of all the Opensource programs outthere. It will be free. Some of the 'wild' ideas we have, which hasn't been tried before, is to have a 3D desktop, or something like that.

If you read all my 'I WANT's' you'll see my other wild ideas

Oh ok I see. So you're just making a new Linux Distro? What about the VMWare included with it as I've read. Will this be free and are you thinking about incorporating it into the Distro?

Ofcourse not. (i don't remember anyone mensioning vmware? ).

I think he meant when you want to test the distro, its easier to use vmware, instead of rebooting all the time etc.

exactly. And we're kinda hoping it'll someday at least make some donation money or something like that. Be a self-sufficient project.

Why not 4.3.0? I haven't tried it myself, but I don't see any reason not to use it. RandR (Resize and Rotate -- you can really change resolutions now, at runtime!) should be cool too.

a few games of peoples choice (my choice --> defendguin) :P
Hmm... tuxracer would be cool. Defendguin, as you said, would be as well. So would lbreakout2. So would chromium. And the entire kdegames package, of course.

    Xterm (version ?)
That gets compiled with X, so don't worry about the version.

    Mplayer (version ?)
Just grab the latest CVS and do some minimal testing. Should work.

Sure, no problem. PM me with your (or whoever's) IP address and the password you want to use, and I'll set up the firewall to allow ssh+sftp+scp from you so you can actually update the site.

    Yay! webspace.

I better finish formatting the site.

And good that we have people involved who know where to start. I'll learn everything I can to contribute, but I have no clue where to start.

    Newest Info...

ok heres how we can do the server cituation... yinrunning, you setup a website with bwkaz and we will leave it there untill he graduates, I'm going to try and work with a guy who just emailed me to set up an actual server for Dux. Instead of getting a sourceforge or sunsite account right now, we will just host it our selves, and hopefully this will work for a while.. Once we actually get this thing going maybe we will get some bigger sponsors to host it

The guy who emailed me is offering like 6.5 gb and I'm going to try and help him get his box set up with support for ssh, ftp, sendmail, and whatever else may be needed.

XFree86 4.3.0 --> we will try this and see how it works

VmWare --> yeah i meant for beta testing, but hey wouldn't it be awesome if somewhere down the line we could be sponsored by the creators of vmware and include it in the os

    next steps...
    ~ website up and running
~ people need to start advertising Dux

I'm going to go email the guy now about the server..
