well Linus Torvalds announced yesterday the Linux kernel 6.12: This is now generally available.

The new kernel version has some interesting new features to offer - and all sounds pretty exciting.
In addition to the usual updates to support current and future CPUs and GPUs, two new features stand out.

note: i have heard that the devs worked allmost two decades to get the Real-Time-Thing done..

For most people real time isn't going to matter. Games could benefit.
Basic linux is a time sharing os where there is a scheduler to coordinate resources between applications etc. Critical events need to happen in a fixed time period or responded to in a certain time period. Embedded applications like a drone flight control software would benefit with real time.

It's as if the base to computer-world believes 'everyone has the latest machines'.. Many of us are running our older machines, or our family handmedown freebie machines..I tried a newer kernel in a slightly older machine.. It destroy the operation of the OS.. I had to reinstall the OS new and clean.. Many of us using notebooks are running older models that aren't compatible with some of the new software evolutions.. Before you upgrade the kernel in an older machine do some research in google on it to know that the upgrade is compatible with your model of machine and OS before destroying the OS with a silly software experiment..

Nearly every new software these days is designed to steal peoples private data.. If someone wants speed with an old notebook, buy the best new fastest hard drive available.. But do so research the new hard drives in google, so you don't buy a useless one full of malware made in chiner...

Holy crap! It's a 20-terabyte hard drive.. Didn't know hard drives were so high-capacity... Don't need it, all my saved data fits in two 1-tera hd's...

In topic Kernel change for old machines and older Linux OS's: I just discovered that changing the Linux Mint Mate 20.3 Kernel to Kernel 5.15 wrecks the OS, but changing it to Kernel 5.7 speeds up the OS.. Problem is that newest kernels are build for the newer hardware and software.. They don't work on the old things...
