tool-question: how to use the snapping tool in inkscape?

good day dear friends on justlinux,

currently try to dive into inkscape. I am musing how to use the snapping tool: i want to be able to work with "objects" - and the bounding boxes.
Some research showed me that there is an option to use the snapping-tool to find out the so called midpoints.

note: i want to combine the dots that are shown in the picture. i need to find how to draw a line from the so called midpoint:

how to apply this to the image - how to draw lines form the midpoints of the dots -
