hosting the photos: self on a server or on google!?
good day dear friends here on JustLinux,😀
well i take photos - for a hobby. But i am asking myself - how is the hosging going more effective than i did this in the past.
Well - what about you: how do you host your images - i am currently musing about the setup of a new version - the self hosted option - that probably might run also immich (the self hosted application): note: i am currently not very sure bout the pros and cons - so perhaps we can discuss it here.
i got aware that every photograph i take - takes some space on the storage.
that said: photographers are - really (!) data-driven: RAW files, 4K/8K videos, backups → enormous storage requirements.
btw: i am only a hobbyist - and i only take sometimes some photographs.
but i am pretty sure: all of us (/especially if we take man photos) who are taking photos am facing the same thing - at least to my humble opionion: we all are facing a ever-increasing RAW series, ( 4K/8K videos ), all add up to terabytes of material ? so my question is: where do you put all that data?
a. Cloud ? they're convenient, but often expensive and not always GDPR-friendly. or on the other side.
b. self hosting....
...while discussing this with friends i have found out - that there were some nice solutions out there
Hmmm - are there alternatives: my friends recommended me to have a closer look at Immich, the modern self-hosting photo app, also runs directly on TrueNAS ? a true professional NAS with ZFS, snapshots, and RAID protection. This gives us:
- our entire media library centrally and securely,
- full control over data protection and backups,
- and the flexibility to access photos on the go via app or browser.
What do you think bout this!?
btw: TrueNAS Comes up with the latest Version the Release-candidaste: 25.0-rc1
see more Software Releases: https://www.truenas.com/docs/softwarereleases/
which of course does not makes sense to run it on a productive side as if biw . (/while its in Beta Mosw )
Dear Friends here in the forums,
i really look forward to hear your thoughts.
....Love Linux - and all things GNU - : and the idea exchange with the community .
