    problem after processor upgrade

The processor on my linux box took a dump, so I got a newer one. Now, linux won't boot. It gets to the point where (I'm assuming) it mounts the cd rom, and reboots. When I try to reinstall linux, it gets to the same point and reboots (booting from cd).

    handy information:
    I'm using mandrake 9.2
    mobo is gigabyte Ga-5aa
processor is AMD K6-2 500 Mhz Old processor was P 233 MMX
    256 MB Ram
    SiS 6326 video card
    Creative 52X CD Rom
I have switched out the cd rom with one I know is good, and had the same problem.

    Any Ideas??

before installing the new processor, you should have re-compiled a new kernel and change the processor type.............
the kernel thinks your using an Intel Pentium when
you actually booted up an AMD.......................way different chips!!!

It's a socket 7 motherboard. the old pentiums and K6's used them.

I can't get it to boot even with the install cd.
I didn't know about having to re compile the kernel.

see if you can get a hold on a pentium based proc for that board
if you cant find one, 5$ and i will send you a 100 or 150 which ever i can find...

I'm pretty sure I can borrow one from work.

Would that keep it from booting using the install disk?

im not possitive, but i think that using the amd on the pentium based board would cause problems, although since i have never had a working pentium board, i only have used k6-2 chips on slot 7 boards(all the pentiums i have tried on those board s fried)

also, are you sure that the new processor is supported speed wise by your motherboard?

Yes, and I double checked the jumper settings.
I used a windows boot disk, and it booted into dos with out any problems.
