Just got around to viewing that youtube video today. 
The first time I used a modem in college, it was one like that, without the fancy box. The very first text I saw that came across the wire... the guy on the other end typed, "Stand back!" 
It was a technically awe-inspiring miracle of modern times.
(9600 baud modems were about $500 back then, or was it $300. For me in college, it was the same as being a Million dollars!  )
